QuoteReplyTopic: White bits at the ends of hair Posted: June 12 2006 at 3:22pm
I've noticed that some of the hairs that fall out of my head have little white bits at the end of them. Can anyone tell me what these are and if I should be worried?
Thanks
P.S. I straighten my hair regularly... is this a factor to include?
Your hair is probably damaged at the ends, with using straightners. A trim will sort this problem, and using a heat protector on your hair whilst using straightner's will help avoid this happening.
When I mean the 'white bits at the end,' I meant the bit that comes from your scalp. I've had a look at a few cross-sections of hair but I dunno what it's actually called!!
I also looked at the hair 'life-cycle.' If hair like this are falling out, with a new hair grow out of the follicle or is it redundant?
Thanks :)
BTW i do condition and use a protection cream ... don't wanna sizzle my hair

That little white bit just means the hair came out at the scalp rather than breaking off in the middle. It's normal to lose around 50-100 strands per day, just as part of the natural life cycle of hair. So long as you're not losing an excessive amount, it's nothing to be worried about.
