I was wrapping my hair the other night before bedtime and the pieces of hair that fell out were very short. (bout 1/4 inch) Does this mean my hair needs a trim? Anyone have any insight?
Oh yeah, my hair is about 12 inches long so it was just the ends

You trim your ends only when you need it. Not by a certain time frame. It is uneccesary to trim hair that is already healthy. Signs you may actually need a trim are tangling, breakage (from splits within the hair), you actually see splits on the ends, or it is just damaged.

You can trim if it is uneven and you don't like it. That doesn't have anything to do with health if there are no splits/damage and probably  has to do with individual growth rate, and growth phase of each hair (anagen, telogen, catogen, etc), so it won't hurt your hair. It is more about looks when it comes to that.

How does the hair look? Doe sit look healthy or broken? If so, you want to trim that area specifically and pamper it with moisture, etc.

you usually can tell when you need a trim. Do you see uneven ends? If so, trim! I don't believe in that "trim your ends 6 weeks religously". If the hair is healthy, what is the need?

Thanks for the responses guys! I took the advice of going through my hair and just trimming what looked damaged. The pieces falling out have decreased dramatically. Plus I learned the true meaning of "trim as needed" thank guys! here's to long, healthy, stong hair!

I can definetely agree with Phoenix. Once your ends are healthy it's good to keep them moisture. I've been using kemi-oyl and so far I haven't had the need to trim my ends in a little over three months.

Your hair could be shedding which is natural.  Drink lots of water.
