I have long very thick hair and no matter what I do or don't do it always seems dry and brittle. I have tried not washing it everyday, blowdry it as little as possible and don't brush it when its wet, except to style. I have tried so many conditioners and hydrating shamppoos but nothing seems to make a difference. Suggestions, please...

Maybe you should go to a salon for a trim and ask the stylist what he/she suggests doing about the dryness. Tell the stylist everything that you do and put into your hair and he/she will help you out on what you should be using for the dryness.

I used to have the same problem.  I got a good clarifying shampoo and left it to set on my hair for 5 min while in the shower once every other week.  I used matrix clarifying.  2x a week I do a deep conditioning treatment with almond oil or Millennia Mud.  I wash my hair, apply the oil and wrap my hair around my head.  I then put a vinyl shower cap on my head, then put a winter tobogan on over that (the vinyl keeps the hat from gettin messy and the tobogan keeps the heat in -- easier to keep on my head than a towel!) and leave it on for 30-60 min, depending on dryness.  I use Back to Basics Raspberry Almond shampoo and conditioner for daily cleaning.

My hair is foil hilighted permed (then straightened again), and I blowdry it and style it every other day.  My hairdresser recommends my method to her clients because of how sucessful I am with it and because my hair shows no real signs of damage.

Part of your problem may be the thickness- make sure you are rinsing your hair long enough in the coolest water you can stand. I have a good friend with your hair type and she swears by Aveda products (I think she uses Cherry Almond Bark shampoo) Shampoo is as important as your conditioner. Definitely do a deep conditioning treatment once a week, with heat (cover with plastic cap then use blowdryer) For leave in conditioning, try Sebatian potion #9, it is awesome.
