Not true. A lye/no-lye relaxer is for coarse thick hair, but a chemical relaxer is more for wavy stringy hair. Or if you want a more temporary solution you can use straightening balms or creams with a blow dryer.

Sodium hydroxide (lye) and guanidine calcium hydroxide (no lye) relaxer may be the only choice to use IF the hair is highly twisted/overly curly, for example on African hair type, but it can also be used on ALL hair type.

However, if the hair is not highly twisted/cork-screw-like, then there is NO need to use lye or no lye hair relaxer product. Especially in your case, you said your hair is slightly wavy and frizzy.

My preferred choice is to use a thioglycolate Hair Straightening product, such as X-Tenso of L’Oreal, so you can do the Conventional thioglycolate hair straightening method.

Then there is the Japanese Hair Straightening method, also know as Thermal Reconditioning/TR. This method makes the hair Permanently Straight and Frizz Free. The hair will look ageless and very pretty. You can learn more by visiting my Website http://www.verticalsinhair.com/process.shtml and my TR Forum http://www.verticalsinhair.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl

You really need to do your home work before trusting your hair in the hands of a stylist. Keep in mind, when the rubber hits the road, ultimately, it is the hair straightening/TR stylist doing the process that’s important.

Hi'...Steve...my name is Jaquisha...and I am hairstylist of some 15-16 years...I have used the lye relaxers...on my hair in the past but they have always left my hair lifeless...I do use them on my clients...but I try to keep them on a strict schedule when it comes to re-touches...I recently used a product named Silis'....it is a silicone based relaxer...on my own hair ...and I have to say I love it...what do you think of it ..if you've heard of it...my hair still feels as strong as before I relaxed it..and it appears to have kept some shine...and it is still soft...but in the past i experienced extreme breakage from lye based relaxers...My boss did not recommend relaxers for my hair because my hair is soft but the curl pattern was too tight for me to just  resort to balms and temporary blow outs...not to mention..if the weather is too hot i'd sweat it out...lol....I look forward to your reply..

Hi Jaquisha,

SILIS of Framesi is a good hair straightener/Curl Reducer, but you need to be very careful!! SILIS is not silicone based relaxer. SILIS is a thioglycolate permanent hair straightening product.

Keep in mind, interchanging sodium hydroxide (lye) or guanidine carbonate hydroxide (no lye) relaxer on hair that has been previously treated with ammonium thioglycolate or vise versa could cause “severe damage to hair”.

Thanks Steve....my hair hadn't been relaxed in more than a year and a half with the sodium hydroxide product......though...my hair was basically virgin...after I cut my hair down to about  two inches....6 month's ago, then i had mostly braided my hair in preparation for weaves... about 6 month's previously to the braiding....so I guess it would explain the strength still being present...
