QuoteReplyTopic: Color-Enhancing Shampoo recommendations? Posted: May 16 2000 at 4:45pm
Can someone here please recommend a good Color-Enhancing Shampoo for me? Currently, my hair color is a light reddish blonde. I'm looking to darken it a little and take away some of the brassiness. I'm looking for a light warm brown color if possible.
Also, am I correct that the shampoos deposit less color than a color-enchancing conditioner would? And, can you mix two colors together to arrive at the depth of color you want with good results, like mixing a blonde and brown color shampoo to achieve a lighter brown color for instance? Thanks so much for any help.
I am a blond that has some red, and use Shades EQ color shampoos by Redken. The Cafe Au Lait and Platinum Ice are great, and I have mixed these two colors before. Also I use some by Artec. At the salon I go to, they mix up my own personal "recipe" for my hair and it works wonders!! I have used the Cocoa Bean (when my hair was a bit darker) mixed with Sunflower, and it even works great on blonde hair. It tones it down just enough without being really brown. Probably shouldn't use it everyday, though or you could get kinda' dark. So I would try Shades (found at any salon or other beauty store that carries Redken) or Artec, which probably is only sold in a salon. Good luck!!
Thanks for the the info on the Redkin shampoos. I'm wanting to go back to my light brown hair (i.e. Cindy Crawford) but don't want to use the Natural Instincts or Castings, since they have peroxide. I tried the Freeman Colordance but the color isn't coming up dark enough. I'm going to try the Redkin shampoos, hopefully they'll be what I've been looking for! Does Redkin have a website that gives more info on the shades of the shampoos?
I'll look into the Shades EQ by Redken. I have a Sally's Beauty Supply near by so hopefully they'll have a good selection. I really appreciate your help! Thanks again!
I used "Chestnut" back when I had light/medium brown hair and it worked great!! I would also try Artec's "Cocoa Bean" and they probably have darker colors, also. I believe they have conditioners in these shades, too, but Redken just has the shampoo line.
I'm sorry, I should have told you sooner; I don't think Sally's carries Redken Shades, but if you have a mall that has beauty salons where you live, this is where I get mine. If not, go to your hair stylist and ask if they carry it.
First of all, thanks again for all your help. You're right Sally's doesn't carry any Redken products. However, I also have a Peninsula Beauty Supply store in my area and they happen to carry both the ArTec and the Redken Shades EQ lines. I'm hoping to get over there tomorrow afternoon, but before I go I wanted to ask your opinion on which line you like better since I'll have both to choose from. Also, I have reddish blonde color-treated hair (my natural color is a medium brown). My hair isn't orange from coloring it too light because I only used ash colors and always added a red/gold drabber to the formula, but it is a little on the brassy reddish side. I'm looking to reduce that brassy/redness and maybe to go just a touch "browner". Anyway, based on that, what colors do you think I should buy? I'll be happy to get two or three shades and mix them all together to achieve the results I'm after. I know I'll probably have to experiment a little before I dial into what I want so I want to start on the lighter end and graduate to a deeper color if I need to than make it too dark to begin with.
Any advice you can give will be very much appreciated. Thanks again!
Sorry I didn't reply back sooner - I don't check this site as often as I'd like!! I have experimented with so many different colors - up until March I had dark brown hair underneath with blonde highlights on top, with a lot of brassiness (red, orange, etc.) and I hated it!! To help tone this down some, I used Shades "Cafe Au Lait" and it helped. Then I had my hair bleached out to get rid of the brassiness because I couldn't stand it anymore!! This was dumb to do (and damaging!) but I do like the color now! To tone down the blonde a bit, I alternate with Shades Cafe Au Lait or if I'm in the mood to be a bit darker I use Artec "Cocoa Bean" mixed with "Sunflower" (this was done at a salon). Sounds crazy but the color works for me! From what it sounds like what you want, I would start with Shades "Cafe Au Lait" to tone down the brassiness, then to go a bit darker try Shades "Chestnut". If you want to go more drastic after trying these, try Artec "Cocoa Bean" (which looks pretty dark in the bottle, but if mixed with a lighter shade, won't turn out too dark). I don't think a beauty supply store would carry the Artec color shampoos; I think you need to go to a salon. But they do probably carry the Artec Smoothing Line (which is good for frizzy hair) or the Kiwi shampoo & conditioner (which smells great and is good for color-treated hair!) I hate to throw this in at the last minute, but Paul Mitchell also has color shampoos, and I have tried the "Violet" (I think this is the right name!?) and it works GREAT to brighten up any highlights in your hair (plus also tone down some brassiness). This is similar to the Shades "Platinum Ice", which brightens highlights also. So there is a lot to choose from, but maybe try the cheapest first - the Shades (Cafe Au Lait and/or Chestnut). Good luck and I hope these work for you!! I guess everyone's hair is different, so what works for me may not be the best for you, but thought I'd tell you what I have experienced!
(I'm not very good at this posting stuff!!) I apologize; I may have told you the wrong name of the brown "Shades". It may be "Expresso", not "Chestnut", although there are other colors that I am not aware of since I have only used the "Cafe Au Lait", "Platinum Ice", and "Expresso" (or Chestnut- I don't remember the name since I haven't used it in awhile!!). It just hit me yesterday after I had sent the previous messages to you!!! Hope you found something that works!!! Remember, there may be a lot more out there; these are just the ones I have tried!!
Thank you so much for going into detail about what you've been using on your hair. I also haven't had a chance to come back here for a while until today.
Your post sounds a lot like my current problem with my hair...the brassiness. It's also driving me bonkers! I have medium brunette hair and have been using a light ash blonde color to lighten it (a lot), and that's why I'm brassy now. I did try the Platinum Ice, but unfortunately, I'm still brassy, and it's still driving me nuts. I also purchased the Cafe Au Lait, but haven't tried that one yet.
I know I shouldn't have attempted to lighten my hair this much, but I was in the mood for a change and couldn't afford to maintain it with a colorist so I did it myself with good ole L'Oreal. I did darken it again for a short while, and frankly, I hated it. I guess I had gotten to used to seeing myself with much lighter hair. You mentioned about finally "bleaching out" your hair to get rid of the brassiness. I'm very tempted to that also, but I'm so concerned that I'll end of frying my hair that I'm reluctant. I'm also not excited about the level of upkeep I'd have to deal with if I went that route. I had a box of Clairol Maxi Blonde/Ultimate Blonde (a bleaching process and then you buy a Maxi Blonde toner color to put on top of your hair once you've bleached it out) in my hand today and almost bought it, but I got nervous and put it back on the shelf. I did buy a medium ash blonde by L'Oreal and I'm wondering if that could help to tone down this lousy brassiness (I could add a red/gold drabber I have on hand to it also). I just hope it doesn't make me even brassier or reddish. I'll be sure to do a test strand first.
Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. If you think of any other ideas, please let me know! If not, thanks again for all your info!
