QuoteReplyTopic: How to avoid ugly hair in the army... Posted: July 10 2006 at 12:41pm
Alright. I know being a soldier isn't the most feminine thing in the first place, but I love my hair. It's long and healthy. I'm leaving for boot camp in 10 days and I'm not cutting off my hair. The requirment is that I have to have it up and secure with no hair hanging below my coller. I've been looking for hairstyles that I can do that will be fast an secure. I'm having a hard time!! I know I have to give up a lot of my haircare habits , but I would like to find an updo that I can wear within regulation that's still somewhat feminine. Something besides those horrible looking sock buns. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmm, maybe. You think it would keep all the whispies away? I was thinking I could even do a "heidi braid" My hair's pretty darn long. I might play with the plait though, thanks!

You have to remember that your hair cannot extend below the bottom of your collar. As far as the "little wispies," you could always trim them to meet the requirements.
You might ask a female recruiter for some tips. BTW, which service did you join? I'm a former Marine and I am proud of you for volunteering.

Well, I don't want to burst your bubble but you might just have to cut it. My sister was in the army and she soon found out that hair care while in bootcamp is a nightmare. You only have 15 minutes when you wake up to shower, change, brush your teeth, do your hair, use the toilet (get the picture) Since she didn't have time to dry her hair, and you have to wear that hard hat, her hair started to sort of rott and fall out. She even tried getting her hair braided. But finally she had to give up and cut it all off. I'm talking about Jada Pinket short (well, maybe 1/8" longer )Thank God she has the kind of face that allowed her to get away with it, and actually ended up looking quite beautiful. Like one of those models with really short hair. She is very feminine and has a great body, so it worked. But growing it out, was a whole other ordeal.
Well, good luck and hopefully you will find another solution.
I'm Mitch and I've been a hairstylist for 15 years. My sister joined the navy quite some time ago she is no longer active due to an injury to her knee. Shw had to get it operated3 times to correct all the damage to her kneecap. Anyway when she joined she tryed every hairstyle in the book to try to save her hair and her hair was almost to her waist. For about 3 weeks she up her hair up in a bun a very tight bun then she had someone who was in her group do a high french braid and make a bun out of the braid that was hanging but there was one thing she only got 15 to 20 minutes to do everything in the morning. That was not nearly enough time for herself to do everything she was lucky she had people in her group to help her. but after a while it just got time consuming and the people helping her told her that they were taking some of there time to help her, so she tryed to do it by herself which was impossible. She had no choice but to cut all her hair off. And in bootcamp the barbers there wonldn't and won't cut any shout styles for her all they were suppose to do is buzz it off. She had no choice but to buzz all her hair off to about an inch all over which I did for her when she had some R & R Time.
I made her hair look feminine spiky with some bangs to style. Well the style looked good on her but she hated to cut all of her hair off. She is now letting her hair grow out and it is just reaching her coller now.
Sorry to say this but you are going to have to cut your hair because the time factor won't let you take of your hair properly. Sorry about that.
Sincerely Mitch

A scare tactic doesn't serve anyone's need. I have has several young ladies return from basic with long hair intact. I have heard horror stories of drastic haircuts against a woman' will, but I have heard more of school teachers molesting children, with less repercussions. If the progressive drill intructor tries to buzz a woman, they can expect to be making little stones out of big rocks for a long time. Such deviancy will NOT be tolerated. Report any thing of the sort to the 1st sargeant at once. They don't want to spend time in Ft. Leavenworth breaking rocks.

I think you misunderstood a little. No drill sargent forced anyone to get a cut. The cuts were done by choice, because of the lack of time and hassle that it was to maintain the hair. As a matter of fact her drill sargeant was upset when she cut her hair, because she didn't ask for permision to do it. In my sister's case because of her hair texture. She has curly hair. Since she only had 15 minutes to do everything, it was impossible for her to dry her hair. So she would have to wear her headgear over the wet hair, which caused alot of damage to her hair. So she decided to cut it. She was luckier than Mitch's sister thought. The barber didn't buzz her hair. He actually scissor cut it. The second time around she wanted it shorter on the sides, so the barber used clippers on the side and styled the top with scissors. She actually looked very pretty and very feminine. Every time she would come home to visit, girls would stop her to ask where she got her hair cut.
At her base she actually had the option of going to a salon. They had one there. But she said she refused to pay $40 at the salon, when she could go to the barber (where the males got their hair cuts) and only pay $7. She actually looked beautifull and very feminine, and you would have never known she got it cut at a barber shop instead of a salon.
So nobody is trying to scare anybody. At this board we share our experiences with one another. Hopefully the original poster won't have to cut her hair. But there is the possibility that she might have to, just because of how hard it is to manage the little bit of time you are given when going through trainning. So we are sharing what we know about the experience.
I don't know about the military, but is there any chance you can do
your shower in the morning without washing your hair, then wash your
hair at bedtime on your own time so when you style it in the morning it
will already be mostly dry? You may not want to do it that way
every time, but it would help prevent problems you might have from
having wet hair in an updo all the time. And you can probably
spritz it with hairspray to keep the wispies back with the french braid
tucked under type of do.

The problem in the military, is that while you are in bootcamp there is no such thing as your own time. Every second of your day is timed and scheduled for you. The other problem is, that they make you exercise first thing in the morning. Then you have only 15 minutes to get ready after coming back from the work out. After running and working out like crazy, you can imagine how sweaty these girls are. So they have to take a shower and wash their hair, because is already soaken wet from the sweat anyway. So they are a little limited in their choices while in bootcamp. After bootcamp then that is another story, since they have a more "normal" schedule after that.

A friend of the family just went into the Navy and there are still regulation haircuts being inforced. They cut it into what I always thought was a bob, above the collar. In fact, I think it is that way for all the armed forces here in the states. Just my 3 cents worth! Debbie
