I rotate those three shampoos, when  I use any one for too long it doesn't seem to work like it should. But my FAVE is Redkin.

Hey I do the rotation of shampoo's too, like I have 1 for curly hair since my hair is naturally curly, one for smoothing when I want it blown out str8, and one volumizing or moisturizing. I have been wanting to try the Biolage smoothing one, but I'll try Redken again.Thanks for your replies.

Definitly Redken. You can't go wrong with that stuff. It is awsome! I use it the the Redken smooth down butter treat and it gives me beautiful smooth hair.

flat ironing my hair with serum or smoothing serum gets my hair smoother than smoothing shampoo

Hi, I'm 21 male with fine hair and I part my hair on the sides.  But I'm still trying to deal with keeping the hair in place more often.  When I'm outside and not wearing a hat, my hair blows all over the place.  Its only 5-6" long.  I have some pantene hairspray that I use but not sure if thats the best way to go.  So I'd like to smooth my hair a bit, but like are you supposed to use a serum or a shampoo?  And is smoothing and de-frizzing the same thing?

I'm pretty new to anything but the cheap hair shampoos and products so redken stuff is good I take it and matrix/biolage?  Do they have ones that moisture and volumize or just volumize?  I'd like my hair to be a little bit more thicker since I have fine hair, but not too poofy.

Also this is probably a dumb question but does anyone know of some good online hat stores, just in case?

Well, you kind of need both. You need a good shampoo and conditioner to prepare the hair. The serum you use for the styling process; and depending of what kind of styling you do. For example, I blow dry and flat iron, so that's when the serum comes in. Makes the hair soft, shiny, and keeps it looking smooth.
 
Redken and Matrix are very good premium brands. I am more familiar with Redken (that's what I use). Since your hair is fine and you don't really have a problem with poofiness, you don't want to go with a heavy conditioner. You might want to try Redken Bodyfull, or Redken Water Rush. Conditioning enough to smooth the hair, yet light enough to allow you to keep the volume you're looking for. The best thing for you to do would be to go to a store like Ulta, if there is one in your area. They have sales people that can help you choose the right product.
Oh! and is smoothing and de-frizzing the same thing? Yeah...I guess you can say that.

sumpremeone: smoothing and defrizzing aren"t the same thing , some creams or shampoos claim to make your hair smoother and straighter but I found out that  it doesn't,defrizzing is straightening, smoothing is putting serum in straight hair then flat ironing and it it will look smooth.
