How do ya'll do it?!?! How do ya'll manage AND style this type of hair!

My baby sister is 10 years old and has for the most part transitioned out of her relaxer (she wants to be natural like me).  But her hair is SO thick and frizzy and dull looking! ugh!  It's completely frustrating!

I don't even know how to explain her hair type.

All I know is when she does get a relaxer you can't tell a difference between the relaxed textured and her natural texture.  It's like a relaxer doesn't take or something.

The only thing the relaxer does is make it thinner and a little more manageable.

Because she wants to go natural Im the designated hairdresser in the house b/c I encourage it, but now Im really tempted to throw that relaxer in and throw in the towel.

Ladies please, any advice/suggestions that you have will be GREATLY appreciated.

have you tried conditioner washes( Aussie is great)- after conditioner washing use a good leave-in like aussie hair insurance or Surge 14 plus hair revitalizer or infusium 23 mixed with aloe juice

Also-once a week pre-poo with castor oil and shampoo with castile soap (dr. woods- www.myvitanet.com , www.drwoodsproducts.com  or www.thechemistrystore.com (this one is unscented). and you can deep condition with cholesterol (queen helene works great for me)

To moisturize- spray with a watery leave-in and then seal with olive oil

hope this helps a little.

Try a wash and go style . I am a 4a/4b lady and yes it is rough to handle at times. Lately I've been doing twist ,applying a product like wetworks to slick it back in sling it in a bun or after a wash and condition i appy silk elements or ecostyle gel w/parnevu t-tree growth creme  to get some curl of wave patterns going, shake and go. oH YEAH HOT OIL TREATMENT!!! I am also compelled to ask how long is sis' hair? My hair just brushes the top of my shoulders and thick. If you don't see the desired results from this suggestion your sister could be the perfect candidate for the 7-day relaxer by culture. I hope this works and I can sympathize...boy can I.

I know it is frustrating and at 10yrs old it may be hard. all the suggestions offered here are great. i know creme of nature detangling shampoo is great. also pre-pooing will help make it softer. before doing anything clear out the tangles with a wide tooth comb and don't pile it up on the head. you may want to check out this website http://www.growafrohairlong.com/
one thing i will say though, don't mix relaxers like no lye with the other brands. That will make the hair break. if you use motions stick to motions. i use the children's no lye (mild relaxer) on my hair and it works pretty well.
She is still pretty young and this would be a good time to get the right routine in for her.

I don't think it has to do with her hair type, because I'm 4a and my hair is not frizzy and dull. I think it has to do with the products and styling techniques  used. Lke the other ladies said braid-outs and such are great for here hair type. Also wash and go styles. I only comb my hair once every two weeks and I never have problems with detangling, just use a good conditioner and let it sit on the hair for a little while and use a wid tooth comb to detangle. During the week I just finger comb an co-wash everyday. Keeping the hair in braids and twists also helps alot because you won't have to comb it for a few weeks.

Actually, I think my hair is pretty easy to manage.  Wash it and style it...pretty much like any other hair. However, that is just how I have always done my hair whether it be relaxed or natural.
Be gentle to the hair and don't try to make it do something it can't do. Style the hair while it's damp...make sure to put in a moisturizer.

Why do you feel the need for hair to shine?  Shiney hair does not always equate to healthy hair.

If her hair is dull, then it could be product build-up and you may want to try a clarifying shampoo. Also, try using moisture infusing shampoos and conditioners.

Thank you all for your responses.  I know I've been away from the board awhile. Sorry bout that.

I don't know why I haven't tried your suggestions earlier, Im just going to start treating her hair like mines (ie co-washes etc.) and see what happens.

Of course it'll be harder for me to try to style her hair b/c she's still transitioning, but we'll get through it somehow.

And cmesweet you're right, her hair is quite simple to comb thru it's just sooo unbelievably thick!!!  I guessed it couldn't get any thicker than mine. Man was I wrong.

And as for the shine thing, it doesn't really bother me... it's my mother Im trying to please.  I am trying my best to keep her from putting a relaxer in my lil' sis head!

Her hair is getting overprocessed and breaking off and she doesn't see that.  All she can say is "she got some nappy sh**!"  pardon the language there ladies.

You see my mother's old school, with the brainwashed belief system of "good hair" and "bad hair".

Do ya'll see the battle Im up against here?

So in conclusion I thought that maybe you ladies could throw something new at me that could shut my mother up.  but I guess not.

Once again thank you all for your advice and suggestions.

Oh yeah! I forgot to add....

babyautumn- her hair brushes the top of her shoulders as well, and what is a 7 day relaxer by culture.

kellie7777- she uses creme of nature now, I think its the only reason we can comb thru it now.. that stuff is probably the best poo out there!

beautywitch- I love these styles, I do them myself on my own head... but on lil' sis mother would not like at all. she doesn't like the whole natural look thingy, looks to "nappy" and unkempt for her (I know, mother has issues! huh?) lol.

cmesweet- already responded in previous post.

soon2b- now that's one I haven't thought of, don't know why, but I haven't lol   Thanks!

I know how it is...I have A LOT of hair.

I forgot to ask...which part of her hair doesn't shine, the relaxed or the natural?

All hair textures do not shine on their own...but it could be product build up or try using some hair gloss products in it to make it appear shinier.

I'll have to say her natural hair will get a sheen before the relaxed part, when it's clean that is!

But it doesn't last long.

the seven day relaxer by culture is a creme in a tube that you only have to sport in your hair for a week. i don't really know if it reverts back afterward or the strength of staying power afterward . it is in Walgreens and you can read it's description on the Walgreen website or beauty depot website.
