Hi,
I have been suffering from dry hair and a lot of breakage for some time now. Two nights ago I decided to try something that a co-worker suggested something to me that works for her. I used olive oil on my hair. The olive oil did wonders for my hair only after two nights. My hair is stronger, shinier, and much softer than before. The procedure I used is as follows:

First I started out with totally dry hair. I warmed some olive oil in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds. I began massaging the olive oil with my fingers on my scalp and the length of my hair totally saturating it. I gathered my hair into a high pony tail and secured with a hair elastic. I took a plastic garbage bag (it was the only thing I had, I plan on getting a shower cap) and cut it so it would fit over my hair and tied it around my head. I put a towel over my pillow in case my hair came out of the bag. I slept all night with the oil in my hair. In the morning, I shampooed my hair with Biolage Hydrating Shampoo twice (if it still feels really oily after the first shampoo then shampoo again if not, then only shampoo once). After shampooing, I used Biolage conditioning balm then rinsed (you can use any shampoo and conditioner you like, Biolage is just what I used). The last thing I did was just let my hair dry naturally. The result was shinier, softer, and stronger hair. I hope this helps anyone with dry hair because it helped me a lot. Feel free to let me know how it works for you. You can email me at csg524@aol.com or post a response on this board.
Later,
Christine :)

Hi Christine,

Yes olive oil is fantastic. It is one of the best all natural deep conditioners. I have been using it on my hair for years and years and it always works. No matter how dry my hair gets a good olive oil contiditioning is so great. I hope you don't mind if I add a few little secrets I have learned over the years doing olive oil treatments.

I love your use of a garbage bag. That is a great idea. I tend to eat up my stash of plastic shower caps and then I use Saran Wrap which is hard to deal with. I love the garbage idea and am going to definitely try it. :-)

Because the olive oil does make the hair very oily, it is important to make sure you keep the oil at least 1 inch away from the scalp or the oil will build up on the scalp over time and become a mess. I had to learn this the hard way. My hair literally got sticky from the olive oil buildup and it took using a clarifying shampoo to get the oil out over a 2 week period. It can also block the hair follicle holes and seep into your skin. YUCK. Better to avoid the scalp. :-)

If someone does have olive oil buildup a good clarifying shampoo like Aveda's or Philou's Green Apple or Vain's Peppermint will work great.

The other thing is that you can cut a lot of the olive oil out of your hair without having to do a lot of rinsing by first applying a very mild shampoo to your hair BEFORE you apply water. Sounds weird to add shampoo to the olive oil without water but it cuts the oil and makes it easier to remove it from the hair without doing a lot of shampoo applications which sort of defeats the whole purpose of putting oil into the hair.

What you can do is get into the shower and pour a little shampoo (I like to use the Aubrey shampoos because they are mild and don't foam much) and you can carefully pat the shampoo into your hair. Then once the shampoo has been applied to the length of your hair you can turn on the warm water and let a little of the water dribble onto your hair and then work up a lather. Sometimes you can get buy with just one shampoo application.

Also, after a hot olive oil treatment it is best not to rinse with cold water since this can sometimes make your hair feel tacky. Warm water is best all the way around for olive oil days.

Also, using a hot towel out of a clothes dryer and wrapping it on top of the garbage bag will add heat and help open the cuticle as wide as possible to help the oil soak down into the shaft. You can also microwave a damp towel..not super wet...just a little damp and apply that although it is not as comfortable and can get drippy.

Hope that all helps.

I can't wait to read other tricks that others have found to be helpful.

One other thing...since the Olive Oil is messy I have learned to apply it while standing in a bathtub. Then I fill the tub with an aromatherpy bubble bath and soak for 1 hour with a face mask and my hair in olive oil. WOW. Do I feel super moisturized and relaxed after that.

Best wishes,
Karen
