How can I get my hair like this? (pics)

   This is my current hairstyle. Nothing too fancy, it's just short.

I would like to have a "natural messy" cut similar to these two pics.

Right now, I kind of have small bangs that I hate and I can't seem to make them stay up, no matter how much gel I put. It never seems to stay up more than a couple hours and it always looks so dry and nothing like how I want it to. Any ideas? Do I need to cut my hair shorter or let my hair grow out more? Perhaps you think there's another hairstyle that would fit me better. Let me know!

Also, I'll be going to my hairstylist next week. For those of you who have experience with this sort of stuff, is there anything specific that I should say to him/her?
