Help getting braids(People with braids help!!)

My brother has been trying to get braids.  He has between nappy and fine hailr, but more on the nappy.  He has been growing his hair since june and shaped it up once in july.  His hair  is about 4-5 inches long and he doesn't really do nothing but pick it out ever once in a while.  So I wanted to get some info on how to make it grow and keep care of it.  I need all the info ya'll can give me that will help him.  Is there a routine he has to follow and what all the things he has to do.
