QuoteReplyTopic: color over heavy highlights Posted: August 27 2006 at 4:55pm
I had grown my hair out to its original color (medium golden brown) for my wedding 2 months ago, it is about 7 inches past my shoulders. Anyway, after the wedding I decided to do something crazy and go blonde for the first time. I've been every other color. So I went to my stylist, and asked her to give me some heavy highlights. I think she was hesitant, because she's only ever seen me with my very healthy, natural brown hair. She ended up doing foils with color, which was so subtle no one could tell I had anything done. I went back for a redo and she gave me some semi-chunky highlights, using bleach, which looked ok, but there were only a few, and I was looking for a more all-over blonde. I went to another salon where the girl used two different types of bleach to do some heavy highlights. After all that I finally got my hair to look like the picture I brought in. But...now I'm already tired of being blonde. I think I look much better as a brunette.
I don't want to dye my hair, as I've done that in the past to try and get back to my natural color, and it was never quite right. I want to do something that won't permanently change the new growth so that I can gradually grow out the highlights and get back to my natural color. Can I use a color depositing conditioner?? Or do I need to go back to the salon to get a glaze???
Thanks!

What about a semi or demi permanent color? I've had great luck with them and they don't have ammonia or peroxide. They also fade and/or wash out in about a month (depending on how often you wash your hair).
I suggest you select a color a shade or two lighter than your natural color. You might get lucky with some practice....I did.
But, as always if you do it at home STRAND TEST!
ARTec color depositing shampoos and conditioners are great! You could try them.....
what's a semi or demi permanent color, and where can I buy it? I've thought of the artec shampoos and conditioners, but i'm a little hesitant because i'm not sure how they would work over the bleached hair. I've also read about people needing a filler...would I need to use that before the semi/demi permanent?

Hmmmm....filler is sketchy. Have you ever bleached/had highlights before? I had to use filler the first time I started trying to go darker from all over platinum. You might not need it. I'd try it without first.
Demi's and semi's are NOT permanent and definitely gentler on your hair. I use Clairol Complements to darken my ends once a month after they fade. Some say it is dulling, but I've never had that problem. I've got a 1/2 head of natural light blonde (about a 8/9) and 1/2 a head of previously bleached blonde (about an 11/12). I buy mine at Sally Beauty Supply.
I use ARTec if I end up a little ashy. I bought Sunflower, but you'd need something darker. Please keep in mind it will not be 'drastic'.
