I have been checking out these boards for a long time and I am sort of surprised that not too many people seem to have the same problem that I do. I have baby-fine, stick-straight, thin hair. There is all sorts of advise around the internet for fine hair but much of it isn`t very good (using pommade, for instance, is a huge mistake). I am searching for a new hairstyle that isn`t a chin length bob. I wore one for 20 years and it was easy and looked good but I just got sick of it. So I had it cut very short and layered (in a short crop I guess) and I have been miserable ever since. I have had all sorts of stylists trying to do something with my hair and it just won`t work. I spend lots of time styling it every day just to have it fall flat (I live in the south with humidity). So the style I have has to be one that doesn`t need to do much more than hang there. Smooth seems to work better than the new "texture" that everyone raves about. I have a square face too so short hair is iffy at best (discovered that AFTER all my hair was gone). Layers and/or perms are a disaster. If anyone out there has been there with this kind of hair and has a solution other than a one length bob, I will love you forever. I have spent thousands of dollars on "salon quality" products that don`t do what they say they will (I only use those for fine hair or volume).

I currently have highlights (those work well at least), very short hair and growing out layers. The back while very short is all one length. Sides are shorter but getting closer to one length. I also have bangs. This cut looks sort of like a really short bowl except the sides are too short to blend with the back.

If you have managed to get through this (bless you) and can help, please do. I can`t believe I am the only one.

Hey, how are you doing? I dont know if you still check your posts, but I am in the same situation as you. I have an oval face though. I am interested in cutting it short...Did you not like your short cut because of your face shape or the type of your hair? If it was shape, then I might go for a short crop where it is shorter on top and longer in back where i can flip it out a bit with a curling iron. I have 2 YOUNG kids, I want something simple and fun. I love the layer look, but as you know it doesnt always work with fine hair...The stylists ALWAYS tell me to go layers. Right now I have Almost shoulder lengthh with SOME layers...Looks good if I use a big curling iron to flip the ends. But it does fall, and I think it will too if I have short hair. I want the messy look thinking it will look like more volume.
SIGH. I hope you are still out there, I would love to talk to you!

Hi Heather,
I am still checking my posts and I am glad to see that someone finally noticed this one. I am still struggling with growing out this mess. It is about mid cheek length and still layered (although they are growing out) and generally looks very bad right now. I am wearing an inverted bob which would be OK in a less humid climate than south Florida but it just sticks to my head here. NO volume at all.

One thing to be very wary of is that most hairdressers don`t understand out type of hair and cut it with lots of layers. Big mistake!! I was set back at least six months in my grow out plan but a hot new stylist I was advised to try. She cut short layers all over and really messed me up.

Try to find someone with fine hair like your to cut your hair. They understand what you are dealing with. I haven`t got any advise beyond that. I am sorry that I cut off my bob and I want it back badly.

Hey I hope you`re coping with your hair all right. Hopefully it`s growing into a style you like more. f it makes you feel any better, having LOTS of thick hair isn`t all it`s cracked up to be. When I step out into Michigan humidity after drying my hair stick straight (no small feat, mind you) it blows up into a big brown halo around my head. It curls and waves in all the wrong places and feels like straw to the touch. Most summer days I don`t even try to wear it down; I pull it back into an updo or something. I would love to have less hair, or hair that would at the very least settle down and not bulge out several miles from my skull. I guess it`s true: you always want what you can`t have :-) Good luck and I hope you find a style you like.

Actually I am at a very, very bad stage of growing out. It is all I can do to keep myself from running into the nearest salon and begging for them to do something. I know that I need to wait and in a few months it will be much better but this is very hard. I can sympathize with spending a lot of time on your hair only to have humidity ruin it. I just have to hope that there is a style for me in someone`s scissors.
