Help! Winter kills my hair when it comes to static. I can`t stop blowdrying my hair because it is so cold where I live. I also have to wear hats. Any help stopping the static?

Hi,

The absolute best way to block static hair attacks is to use a good leave-in conditioner after you shampoo. Remember, NEVER use hot water since this will add to dry hair and potential static.

What is also great is to use a combo product...a detangler that is also a leave in conditioner. Also, a moisturizing shampoo will help keep the hair cuticle softer and less prone to static.

Note: If your hair is fine or thin be careful not to use a heavy moisturizing shampoo or your hair may feel limp. Use a normal shampoo and a rinse out conditioner with a light leave-in conditioner OR use a light conditioning shampoo, skip the conditioning step and use a light detangler instead of a detangler/leave-in conditioner. If your hair tends to get oily or is thin/fine try some different combos to avoid your hair getting too flat.

If your hair is NOT fine or thin, use a good leave-in conditioner or combo detangler/leave-in and then since you need to blow dry you can still minimize static and potential heat damage by blow drying on low heat, slow speed.

The lower the heat, the slower the speed, the less frizz potential. Also, direct the air flow of the dryer from the roots to the ends. This closes off the hair cuticle and makes it less prone to static.

A secret for keeping down static hat head is to spritz your hats, tutrlenecks and high collor sweaters with Static Guard BEFORE you put them on your hair.

So if you use a good moisturizing shampoo, a good detangling/leave-in and then blow dry low heat, slow speed and then use the static guard on the clothes before you put them over your head or on your hair, you should eliminate most cases of static.

Another trick for really static hair is to sleep with a small room humidifier (a trick that I have used and it works) and you can also keep a good tube of leave-in conditioner (Phyto #7 is amazing although a little pricey) in your purse and apply just a tiny dollop into the palms of your hands any time your hair acts up. Then smooth the palms of your hands over your hair.

Viola...instant de-static for your hair.

Best wishes
Karen
