I have always had straight hair (I am 29). But for the past 9 months or so, I have noticed lots of thick, curly, darker hairs growing in. They are CURLY. Not just wavy... And by thick, I mean at least twice the thickness of the rest of my hair. I have red hair and these hairs are growing in a very deep color of red...like a RED red as oppposed to a copper red.

I was on antibiotics for over a year and that is the only thing that was different before my hair started growing in like that. Maybe I am just paranoid, but could that be why? Or is it just that I am getting older?

This has been sucking since the curly hairs are also only about 2-4 inches long when I notice them...the rest of my hair is down to my bra closure on my back. So it is obvious that these are new-ish hairs.

I hope someone has some insight...thanks :)

Being on anti-biotics can definitly affect your hair. I would try a detox cleanse to help the body get rid of the left over meds in my system. In the meantime condition well and use a blow dryer and brush or a flat iron to straigten out the little curls. Make sure you use a professional flat iron (all ceramic) not a cheap metal one or it will burn your hair. But a blow dryer and a good round brush should be enough to keep the curls under control until your hair is back to normal.

The problem is she doesn't have curly hair. Her hair is naturally straight. It is not normal for totally straight hair to just get super curly. And is not her whole head I think. I think is just parts of the hair. So something else must be going on.

Yeah, it's not every hair on my head. I have mostly board straight hair, but I have many very curly (we're talking 1cm diameter spiral) hairs growing in. And they are not "buddying up" together...they are randomly placed on my head. And they are a different texture... If I could get it all to come in curly, I'd rock that hairstyle! It's just that it's not consistent at all.

I have now been off the antibiotics for about 3 months (was on tetracyclines for cystic acne, which I no longer have...thank the Lord!) and am on the pill now to balance my hormones out so I don't break out anymore.

I will just have to see if this renegade curly growth continues now that I am off that medicine. It is really the only change I can put my finger on!

I have asked about those before too...after years of wondering why they are there, and pulling them out only for them to grow back in just as kinky, dark and thick, I think they must be caused by damage.

My neice is a cosmetologist and she said there was something missing in the hair and that they should be pulled out so the hair has a chance to grow right.  I did that, then I over did that, pulling out ones I thought even MIGHT be them (so please don't overpull out your hair, it will be noticeable that you have a halo of short hairs before you know it!).  I think I may indeed have less of them after pulling them (the right ones) out, and giving them time to see if they'd grow back, but I definitely have plenty that just continue to grow back just as kinky as before, so no, that didn't wind up curing the problem.

I only have them on the top of my head, and close to the top, and I have more of them where my hair parts.  Sun and heat damage maybe?  I don't know, but I don't know why else I wouldn't have any on the lower layers.  Do yours come out all over your head, or just near the top and parts like mine?

Oh tetracycline! that is pretty strong stuff. I used it alot to treat infections and decease on fish at my old job. The stuff is good but it does have some side effects on the fish for a little while. I don't know what kind of side effects they have in humans, but the hair change could be one. Well, lets wait and hope for the better. You know what, I would go to the straight hair forum and look for Steve Tzech.... OMG! I can't remember how to spell him name right now (and I'm a big fan)and ask him about it. He is a hair expert and can probably give you an answer.

Much love, Shary
