Hey,
When my husband met me last year I had hair about 6 in past my shoulders.
He adored it, but shortly before we got engaged I cut it,
to what was supose to be shoulder length. It ended up at chin length.
Yea it was really bad, sigh.
Well that was May of last year. I added layers to it in october.
I loved it and he said I was cute and that he liked it.
But this week we talked honestly,
and I found out how much he loved it long,
but he never had the heart to tell me.
So I`ve decieded to grow out my hair.
After reading up on the internet,
what an adventure it seams.
But my question is since my hair is healthy do I need to even out the layers,
before I start growing my hair out again?
Some things I read made it sound esential.
But I didn`t understand?
Note: In the front some layers are degrees of chin length
but the back it just starting to creep off my sholders.
FYI It`s not a mullet. The layers a a lot more sutle than they sound.
Also any tips or general hair growth advice would be most appecated!

Thanks,
Juliet

Hey Juliet Sophie again; you sound like you have a great head start on the growing out thing.

I recommend finding a great stylist, if you don`t already have one.

If you haven`t already...get the proper everyday maintenance products. Shampoo and Conditioner etc. Don`t over moisturize (unless you have naturally curly hair and/or live in a very arid climate) the right protein is important too.

If you need to find a stylist look for one who specializes in long hair, they are few, but they are out there. Simply, call the Salons in your area and ask if they have a stylist who specializes in helping people grow hair out.

If that doesn`t work, look for a stylist who has beautiful long hair. He/She will help you to decide how best to grow so that you have a Style the whole time your growing. That way it will be easier and more fun.

Good Growing Sophie.

Hi Juliet,

What a pretty name....and honestly when I imagine Juliet it`s someone with long hair :-) If you keep your hair trimmed and in good shape layers can look just fine. It`s a personal decision, so if you like them there`s no reason to cut them out. However layers can start to look scraggly as your hair grows out if you don`t keep them neat. Long hair of uneven lengths can look just plain sloppy. But with the proper maintenance long layers can look great. Good luck with the growing process!

Sounds like your layers look great and if you like them they will add movement and style to your hair as it grows and gets longer. The longer it gets the more distance you may want between the different layers.

I've grown out my hair after layer cuts many times, without trimming them at all. The big challenge for me was having the patience to wait while they were growing out. Headbands and barettes helped. In six months, you should be well on your way. The time goes fast.

Elissa, what you just described leaves me baffled why women go to layers in the first place. A woman who until recently worked on my staff had straight, mid-back-length hair. It's been longer and it's been shorter, but it looked nice, despite having dark roots that definitely needed lightening. She showed up one day recently with a Farrah Fawcett-type haircut that was extremely dated and fluffy looking. Other women told her to her face that it looked "cute," then ripped her behind her back. (Actually, I find that fairly common with women's haircuts and their so-called friends.) In the three months or so since the haircut, I've seen it done like it was meant to look maybe 10 times. The rest of the time, it's flat and uneven, thanks to the layers. In the opinion of many, she looked better before and obviously she doesn't have the time or inclination to curl it. It's been my observation that women who get their hair layered rarely like it and spend months growing it out to the original desired length. Many, of course, grow tired of the original look and start the cycle all over again.

Long hair rocks.

Gord,

I can only speak for myself. I do have a method behind this madness.

I like to get a layer cut (long layers, angled sides, no bangs) after several years of growing my hair fairly long to return it to near-perfect health. I welcome that light and healthy feeling of the layers. I have medium textured wavy hair, and long layers bring out the wave nicely while allowing me to maintain the "long" look.

But alas, I am one of those who are loathe to get my hair cut. After eight or ten weeks, when the layers need trimming, it's just my way to instead grow them out. My hair grows fast.

And then, a year or two down the road, I'll do it again.

This also keeps me from becoming bored with one look or the other. Granted, these looks are not so different for me anyway. My hair just waves a bit more when I wear long layers.

Elissa
