I am in my mid-40s and my hair is about 50% grey. My hair is naturally straight medium brown and very thick (the grey is rather wirey).

I have been coloring it for several years at home using professional Wella Color Charm permanent color products I get at a local beauty supply shop. My hair used to be short-to-medium, and now I have grown it out so that it is shoulder-length with a bit of layering.  Sometimes it looked a little bit dry, but basically it was OK, especially if I kept the conditioner on it longer than usual once in a while.

Here is the problem. I recently decided to go to a local salon to treat myself to a professional haircolor for my birthday. The stylist (who is also supposed to be an expert colorist) suggested we also do highlights. Since I'd never had that done before, I thought it would be an interesting change.

Well, the color and highlights came out OK, but now my hair is dry and damaged. The highlighted part is especially straw-like. Now I'm kicking myself, because I should have realized that highlights are one more chemical process that can damage the hair.  I trusted the stylist and assumed that she knew what she was doing. This is a high-end salon that is supposed to have a great reputation. Needless to say, I am very disappointed.

I usually use ARtec Kiwi products, and my local supply shop also recommended ISO products. I've washed my hair a few times since I had it done at the salon, but no matter what I use, my hair still looks brittle.

I think I need some sort of intensive treatment to repair the damage. But there are so many products out there, it is confusing! I have noticed that the silicone-based serums (I have a couple) make the hair look a little bit nicer, but I know that they are not really repairing the damage -- they are just a cosmetic fix.

Since I just finished growing my hair, I'm not going "cut away" the damage. So I have to live with it and try to fix it.

I appreciate any and all suggestions. I'm not sure whether to try a home remedy (egg and mayo), some middle-of-the-line product like Infusium or that new Pantene hair repair line, or something expensive like Kerastase.

I need something that really truly repairs color-damaged hair. Help!

I know this isn't going to be very helpful, but damaged hair cannot be truly "repaired." The best you can do is find a conditioner that your hair responds to well, and use it generously. The best thing you can do at this point is keep your hair well-conditioned and moisturized, keep trimming off the damage gradually as it grows out.

There isnt a product that is going to be a miracle and repair the damage your best bet is to keep trimming off the damage and to slow down on the use of coloring i think coloring is making ur hair that way its best if you have long hair to not color because the only option is to cut it off.

Nexxus has a good product line for dry brittle hair and also for color treated hair i would also use there Y serum treatment. Also condition your hair with grape seed oil and see if that makes it any softer.

My hair is 50% grey. Not coloring it is NOT an option. I need to touch up the roots every 6 weeks or it looks awful. I try not to put any color on the rest of the hair unless it seems to need it for some reason.

Have you tried Aussie 3 min Miracle, its fantastic, you will need to use it often though, its a little expensive, but worth it. I dont know if you live in the UK, or the US. Most good store supply Aussie products.

Best of Luck.

Ps, Bleach is really damaging to the hair, because salons use a high % of peroxide to lift the colour pigments out the hair, thus causing the damage, next time try asking the colourist to use a hi lift colour , its much kinder to the hair.
