QuoteReplyTopic: braided extensions Posted: February 18 2001 at 5:50pm
I`ve been experimenting with giving myself extensions by braiding them in, and totally love them!! The problem is that they slip out and get pretty ratty after about 4 or 5 days. I know there is a way to "pinch braid" them in using a thread or something (sometimes referred to as the "hairpolice method". Does anyone know how to do this? I`ve been told that the braids can be left in for months at a time this way, and unfortunately very little info exists about microbraiding caucasian hair. Any suggestions? -Jenny

I wear braided extensions, but they`re done at a salon. What part of your hair gets ratty -- the majority of the length or the hair by the braid? Also, are you using human or synthetic hair? If human, what grade of human hair?
Unfortunately, I don`t know the exact method, but my stylist takes a piece of loose hair, doubles it at the end closest to my head and uses a small strand of my natural hair as the third section and braids all three together and then ties them with heavy duty upholstery nylon thread about a half an inch from my scalp. The longest I`ve gone between tightenings is 10 weeks, and I think I had two braids come out (which is well within the normal range).
If you lived near me and one of us knew how the exact technique worked, we could save each other a bundle!

The part that gets ratty is my own hair... the part right by my scalp... after about a week it looks really fuzzy... and gel helps a little, but it seems like there must be a way to keep it smooth longer. I just really don`t want to pay someone a couple hundred bucks when I don`t mind doing it myself. I`m using synthetic kanekelon, which has been working well for me, and since I`ve been replacing it every couple of weeks, it`s nice cause it`s cheap. Also, since the braids are not tied in I`m wary of washing it... The braiding method you`re describing is what I`ve been doing, I just can`t really figure out the thread part, no one seems to be able to explain to me how that part is done. Does anyone know?? (Oh and I live in Philly) -Jenny

Hmmm...my hair is braided directly against the scalp. Is the hair that`s fuzzy your own hair that`s not included in the braid? I`m not quite sure I understand.

Oh my dear, I wish it were only a couple of hundred dollars!

I`m not familiar with that. Could it possibly be causing the hair to frizz?

They`re not tied in at all? How do they stay in?!
To tie it off at the end, you literally just wrap the thread tightly around the hair, tie a knot in the thread and then cut the thread. Have you ever tried that? It`s kind of like putting a ponytail holder at the end of a braid, except that you use string and it`s pulled tighter.
