I see people's measurements in posts and wonder. From where to where? One person posted that their hair is shoulder length and measures 17 inches. I am confused because when I measure my shoulder length hair it is maybe12 inches from the top of my head to the end in the back. Then Some have measurements of 24" and it is waist length......I measure and I would need quite a bit more. I realize a lot depends on how tall you are....but I feel that these discrepancies are a bit bigger. Can someone please post the standards for taking hair measurements?

Thanks in advance.

The standard way of measuring is from the hairline (where your scalp meets your forehead) , over the head, down the length at the back, to the end of the longest strand.

To do this properly, you need the help of a friend, and a plastic or cloth tape measure.

If you have wavy or curly hair, it is best measured when wet and combed.

My hair is shoulder-length and 18 inches. This is because I am a smaller than average woman. That means that my hair will reach waist length at 25 inches. A taller woman may need 34 inches to reach waist-length.

Maybe it is because you are measuring from the top of your crown rather than your hairline that the confusion arises.

Hope that helps.

I agree with Uzma on the instructions.
You might want to check out... www.longhair.org/measuring.htm

I'm 5'4" and I will reach waist length at about 27"
I think I have a short torso.

Hi AManda! I came up with 17" which was so inspiring! I have a questionthough.....If I am measuring from the top of my forehead at the crown and going back, the hair on my forhead does not reach the bottom length in the back. So do I keep measuring until I reach the length in the back?

I decided to take small steps so that I have more times to celebrate!! My first goal length is 26" and if I do the math right, I should be there by 8/04!!!

Yes, you want to keep measuring until you get to the bottom length in the back.
What it 26" on you? Mid-back? Or just a number you came up with?
I'm happy for you!

Hey Amanda,

Thanks for clarifying. My hair is 17"! At 26" it will be right above the small of my back. I love that length. I don't have any tattoos, but I would imagine if someone had a tattoo in the small of their back, that this length would be the perfect compliment. Waist length is 31" for me. I am 5'3 and I guess I have a high waist.
