My son is naturally "dirty blonde" and has been dying his hair dark brown for a few years. He wanted to go back to his natural color so he started with L'oreal's hair color remover kit. It left his hair different shades of red and orange with blonde at the roots. The directions said it would be this color (red and orange) and was ready to be colored. He used Revlon's Colorsilk dark ash blonde 60 and he now has mostly orange and blonde with a little red at the ends. I have been reading all the info posted here about coloring and it seems the ash should have countered the orange. Is there anything he can do now besides professional intervention? He doesn't even want to go to school tomorrow.

I can think of 2 reasons the results turned out this way. The first is that maybe the hair color remover needed to be used again to remove more color. If your son had a darker orange/red color after the color remover, maybe the process needed to be repeated to take it down even lighter. I know many people here say that they have to do the color remover a couple of times sometimes. Another thing: the hair was rather porous after processing and if he dyed it without using a protein filler it would explain the uneven results. It sounds like the ends grabbed more color and are darker. He may need to use the color remover again. I'm not a pro on color removal though. Hopefully someone else can help with that. Tons of people here have been through that process.

I think Hannebash is right. The remover may have needed to be used again...or dare I say it,his hair may have to be lightened. If it was only orange,it wasnt lightened enough to get to a blonde shade. You would have to lighten it and leave it on until the hair turns a yellowish color, then color with the dirty blonde color. You could choose one of those ultimate blonding in one step dyes (blonde supreme?) and then try doing the darker blonde over that.
I would go to a professional, but they could charge alot. At least if it doesnt turn out that great at home,he is a boy and cut it shorter and no one will probably even notice.
best of luck to you...I hope it works out.
