QuoteReplyTopic: Need help with colour Posted: November 14 2006 at 7:32am
I've never dyed my hair before but want to try a colour on it. I'm a male, and will have shortish hair when I dye it. I want to dye it red, like bright red, only problem is my natural colour is dark brown hair.
I saw a product for the colour I wanted in a store and it showed how your hair would turn out for different colours, it didn't even show brown or black hair, it said a pre-lightener could be used. I found the pre-lighteneter and even this said not recommended for medium brown to black hair
So my question is, how do I get my hair to the right tone before I dye it red ? Can bleach be used ? If so, what type, as i've never done this before
Any help appreciated

It would help if you told us the brands and names of the colors. There are pre-lightening kits available at any drugstore that basicly are bleach that can be used. I want to say one called super blue,or really any that says maxium blonding in one step might work. However, you probably wouldnt want to leave it on the full amount of time because you are not trying to go blonde, just red.So you will have to watch the changes the hair goes through and rinse when you see reddish/orangeish looking hair. At that point, hair will be ready for the color you want to add to it.It is important to add that color,or hair will left looking orange. You can use bleach if you choose. You will have to find a BEAUTY SUPPLY store though like SALLY'S.They sell kits,or you can buy the bleach and the developer seperate and mix them. I'm not an expert about which developer to use though (Volume 20,40,etc) so asking a sales associate might help. I dont really think you need to bleach it though...just lightening it should be enough. (if it lightened too much and red is applied it could turn out pink!)
You could try going to www.clariol.com and get a instant message color consultation with a color specialist. They are pretty helpful.
