In October I had hair that went all the way down my waist. I got it in me for some reason to cut it for a new job I was getting. Well, I regretted it RIGHT AWAY but after I lost the job in December, I have seriously been angry at myself for cutting it. It's only long enough to put into a pony tail now.

Today I got some pictures developed, of me a day before I cut it, and I am so envious of the pictures. I just want my hair back. I just want my hair back. *sigh*

Anyway, I'm not really going anywhere with this thread, I just had to join in hopes somebody would understand what I am talking about and offer some encouragement for me trying to grow it out again.

I know this has probably been asked eleventy thousand times, but those things you see in magazine ads for 'grow your hair 6 inches in 2 months' don't really work, do they?

:(

You "did" sell out for your job, or it seems like it. It may be cruel to say it, but you DID choose this, live with it.
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.

Hi. Believe me, I know what you're going through. I personally never tried any of the "miracle grow" products for hair, but I've heard that they don't work. I think the best thing you can do now is just keep your hair healthy and be patient. Before you know it your hair will be long again!

Hey! Sorry you're not happy with your hair :( . Don't feel too bad...everyone makes a BIG mistake with their hair at some point (or like some of us, many times). Just remeber that its up to YOU to decide on what you like- don't give in to pressure or expectations. If you like your hair super-long, then it doesn't matter what anyone thinks, even if it is for a job or whatever. You're your own unique person and if anything or anyone attempts to stifle that, then they are doing you an injustice.
Good luck growing your hair back & I hope it turns out as long and beautiful as you could ever wish for :)

Love,
Inga

PS- Hey Kintaro- that was kinda harsh...how about a little sympathy?

Welcome TOUW! We are glad you came for support. I too am growing my hair from a chinlength tapered bob I got last may. My hair was BSL and gorgeous too. I just had a baby and wanted something that was easy and out of my face. Well, that was a mistake. So I came here. I have had only 1 trim since and it is now reached my shoulders. I am on my way to 26" inches of hair which I should have by 8/04. Just learn all you can about taking care of your hair and enjoy the growing stage. AND come here to talk about it!!

P.S. Ingrid is right and Kintaro is being insensitive (don't listen to him)lol!

Happy growing!

Contrary to the last post, do listen to me on occasion, I'm just sorry about the harshness, I have seen 2 girls get totally deceived in similar situatins (one for a job, one for her prom), and I honestly think that it is the worst thing that could happen to them in those circumstances short of being shot or run over. Sorry if my hatred crossed over :)

I have tried Hair Vitamins and my hair has grown slightly faster than normal. I completely understand how you feel. I had my hair cut into a pixie. I feel really odd like my hair doesn't match my personality, if that makes any sense.

What had a new job having to do with long hair? Anyway, I hope you'll have long hair again.

Gah. Another case of "Teh Conformity".

Short hair has been a bit of a trend for a long time. Supposedly people with short hair are all sophisticated and "Intelligent"(Well it's on your head =P ) and it's easier to get a job if you have hair like everyone elses. It's distgusting and reminds me of the concentration camps where they cut everyones hair off first. Much like life.

Call me an idiot, but I'd say the only reason for having short hair is because you want to have short hair.

Don't give in to pressure. Don't listen to a society run by Bigots and Greedy beasts.

In general, grow your hair long if when you want, cut it if you want. But only if you want.

For now I'd suggest extensions, or the most primitive of techonologies, the Wig (TM).

I had cut my hair because it was fried beyond repair. But I'm wondering how many people have cut or changed their color or style for a job? This is very odd to me. If you are pressured to change your hair or any part of you for a job then it seems to me that your job has ownership of you. This is actually really scary to me, seriously. Has anyone been approached at work about their appearance? Since when did long hair become unprofessional?

I have never heard of a woman being forced to have her long hair cut for a job unless she was working around dangerous machinery where her hair could get caught in it, or maybe a woman having certain jobs in the military.

I also went from waist length hair to a short do but I did it on my own.

Why are you upset with your short hairstyle? I wear my hair now in a very short pixie and I love how easy it is to take care of and I love the look, as does the man I will be marrying in a couple of months.

Give your short hairstyle a chance. You may like it better!

No - I'm afraid the "Grow your hair quick" pills don't work. However, if you have an imbalanced or junk food diet, then a good multivitamin may help. Also ensure you are getting sufficient protein (minimum of 0.5 grams for every kilogram of body weight).

The roots of the hair are key. Try and gently massage your scalp (search the internet for sites that will show you how). This will stimulate blood supply to the growing follicles.

Having said that, any changes as a result of the above are going to be subtle and pay off in the longer term.
You have had long hair and you know the patience that requires - there is nothing except time that will "cure" your present dilemma.

I suggest you treat this situation as an opportunity to nurture your hair and pamper it, so that by the time it reaches your waist again, it is in better condition than it was originally. There are lots of tips on these boards and most of them are effective, fun and scary (satin bonnets...).

Anyway, I wish you well and thank you for sharing your lesson with us all: Jobs are temporary - hair is for life.

Good point, Uzma! :)
Maybe I'm just being young & naive here, but a job is a job, and shouldn't take precedence over your personhood, personality, or individuality. A job is important, but it seems like people tend to define each other by what they do for a living. For some people, their job is their true purpose, and they love it and don't mind being defined by it. For others, their job is just to put $$$$$ in their pocket and their true love is in something else.
For some people, cutting their hair for a job is no big deal- hair isn't a priority for them. For us hair-obsessed folks, it is a priority, and a demand to cut it for employment reasons is an infringement on our persons...anyway, talking too much here. :)

Lady Maria I'd have to object It's great that you like your hair but this girl obviously doesn't - trying to convince her otherwise could in a bad situation discourage her from growing it out again and having the hair she really wants. Just because you like something, doesn't mean it's possible for everyone too. I'm a guy but I'd still hate to have Pixie (That's about 2 inches long right?) length hair, even though my hair is an untamable mess at the moment. Hair is part of person: Having it cut when you want it long is like missing a limb, having too long when you want it short can be like being too fat.

I've been there before and know how you feel. Don't worry, it'll grow back. I cut my hair to my shoulders about 12 years ago and told myself I would never do anything so drastic ever again.
I too went through something in October at my place of work and I ended up quitting my job and cutting my hair. I was being stalked by a stranger who was interested in my long hair. At the time, my hair was to my knees...I don't know if I'll ever grow my hair that long again becuase the situtation I was in made me feel so uncomfortable. After the stalking, my husband wanted me to cut my hair to the middle of my back and I just couldn't do it - right now it is to my waist and he is still asking me to cut more...which I'm planning on doing today...I'll keep you posted - not sure if I have the strength to do it.

I know this was written a few months ago, but I just want to say that I've been there, too! I know that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that says, "What the %$#@! was I thinking?!"

However, it's completely fruitless to dwell on the negative. Look forward. Keep the hair as healthy as you can, and hey, be thankful that you have enough for a ponytail!

Also, relish the ultra thick ends that you probably have.

I know what you going through, I recently cut my hair and wish that I hadn't done it now. But I agree with Jennifer, don't dwell on the negative. Instead, just take really good care of the hair you have now. Good luck!
