Approximately how long, in inches is waist length? Just wondering, as that is my aim :)

Depends on the person. I can clearly say that a maximum bound (me), which in some cases goes below the butt of some people, would be a group of strands since all hair is not the same length of 97-109 cm or 38-43 inches.

Then again, I'm not stopping there. It's a goal, but not a final destination. Good luck :)
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.

waist length is a descriptor - not an exact measurement. As Kintaro points out - it's going to be different on everyone.
The most commonly used descriptors for length are :
Shoulder - self explanatory, right?
BSL - to your bra strap - on men, this would be mid back.
Waist length - particularly on women, the body has a natural indent at - the waist.
Hip/tailbone length - inbetween waist and classic.
Classic - to the bottom of your bum
Mid-thigh - this is bwtween classic and knee length
Knee - self explanatory
Calf - ditto
Ankle - ditto

And just my .02 - the single most important element of having long hair - patience.
