QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Problem. Please Help :( Posted: November 29 2006 at 12:01pm
Hi everyone. I'm having some problems with my hair lately.
Maybe I'll give some background info first.
I'm 22. I have blonde, curly hair...medium length..i'm fair skinned..and I live in Toronto, Canada...where the winters are semi dry, and the summers are humid as heck.
So, here is my problem :(
For maybe the past 2-3 months, I have been using the new line of head and shoulders shampoo on my hair, because my scalp was very sensitive and itchy..with some dandruff showing up. The product worked very well..the dandruff went away. However, because it is a dandruff shampoo, I decided it was obviously time to stop using it when the problem went away...also, I heard (not sure if this is true) that head and shoulders shampo is meant for dark hair and actually ends up darkening blonde hair..which I really don't want.
So now..about a week ago, I bought a natural shampoo from a health food store (and conditioner)..its for blondes..made with lemon/lemon peel/camomile, etc....no harsh ingredients, very delicate...
However, I've noticed that my dandruff is coming back again and my scalp is starting to get irritated and itchy...I don't know what to do..I like this shampoo, and it highlights my hair nicely..plus, its natural. I don't want to keep using a dandruff shampoo on my light hair for the rest of my life...!
Can anybody tell me what I should do? :( This seems to be an ongoing problem for me. I always have to go back to the dandruff stuff..is it because I got my scalp used to it or something? Ugh..anyways, help would be very much appreciated *sigh*

According to everything that have read on the issue (including this website), it seems that if you have dandruff, it's almost impossible the determine the cause of it. There are a ton of different possibilities, making it impossible to cure this problem.
There really is no way to get rid of it other than to continue using the shampoo that works, in your case that would be Head&Shoulders. It is recommended to continually use these shampoos, or else as soon as you stop, the problem will come back, as you know.
So unfortnuately, if you don't want the problem to persist, you will have to continue using Head&Shoulders.
If you really don't want to continually use Head&Shoulders every time you wash your hair, try rotating it with the other natural shampoo. Use Head&Shoulders a couple of times a week and than the other shampoo the next couple of times you wash your hair. I guess that's probably the best way to deal with it.
You can also try taking vitamins, supplements, apple cider vinegar, and different natural oils that will help control the problem, but none of that will eliminate dandruff for good.
Yea, there are a lot of theories about the causes of dandruff. Apparently if you have it, you have it and have to deal with it. It's unfortunate, but most people get it at some point in their lives. It's good that there's a way to control it at least.
I have read recently that Head&Shoulders, as well as other clarifying/dandruff shampoos lighten dyed hair, and that they reduce brightness of the color. I don't know if that applies to natural color as well. There are a ton of positive reviews about it, and most people claim that it's very gentle. So there is no definite answer to whether or not it will darken blonde hair, but I doubt that it would cause any significant changes on natural hair color.
The best way to find out is to just continue using it to solve the dandruff problem, and monitor you hair color at the same time. If there is a change, than start rotating with the other shampoo... if not than that's good news for you.
About dandruff..have there been any studies that suggest possible hair loss in the future due to it? Or is the worst thing about it the itchiness and flakes?
maybe the shampoo with lemon ingredients it what's irritating it since lemon juice can dry or irritate sensetive skin... it happens to me because I have pretty sensetive skin and whenever I use lemon juice on my hair to lighten it the skin on my face feels pretty dry and itchy afterwards

According to an article on this website, dandruff causing baldness is a myth and there is no evidence proving that it causes baldness. So I don't think you need to worry about that.
Basically everything you need to know you can find on this page:
Check your lemon shampoo, I'm willing to bet it says somewhere on it
that its a clarifying shampoo. That is to help strip residue from
products off of hair and should only be used once every 2 weeks to once
every 2 months - not every time you shampoo. Try a regular
shampoo, (and trying diluting it may help to strip less moisture from
your scalp over time. Get a small bottle and make up only what
you'll need at a time, 50/50 with water, roll slowly to mix, don't
shake). If it does not work, like the others said
you may need to use the dandruff shampoo every once in awhile.

ThisGirlo's advice is great. You can alternate shampoos as she sugested. You can also try using a natural shampoo for the dandruff. Lamas beauty makes a great chinese herb shampoo, that gets rid of the drandruff and itchiness, and has all natural ingredients, that also promote healthy hair growth and helps with thining hair. No sulfates at all. Their products are really great. You can check it out at Lamasbeauty.com.
I had a bit of a struggle with Dandruff a few months ago. It went away but I did a lot of research into it during that time.
I used T-Gel to get rid of my dandruff, which has coal tar in it. Dx (stinks) but works magically.
At first I had to use it frequently but then just once a week to keep my scalp in check. And now I just use it every now and again when I find some flakes.
I don't know if it was because mine was quite mild but you could try that.
Or use Head and Shoulders and the one you like that you bought (though the lemon could irritate). Just alternate. Or find out how long it takes for your scalp to become irritated and flakey and make a routine round that.

Neutrogina T-gel is great. I used it when I developed a temporary dandruf problem (don't even know what started it to beging with). However, it is full of sulfates and carcinogens, so I crossed it off my list. I heard oiling hair with organic jojoba oil before washing gets rid of dandruff and gives you beautiful hair.

Apple cider vinegar is supposed to help with dandruff and help the PH balance of your hair. I usually do a 1/4 of a cup with about two or three cups of water mixed. I put this in between shampooing and conditonr and massage it into my scalp and leave it in for about two minutes. You can do it as a final rinse too. Google Apple cider rinse for dandruff and you will see alot of positive replies and ideas for it.

There ARE some kinds of scalp irritation that are linked to hair loss - I had this until I decided to go to natural hair care (no more dyeing/bleaching/highlighting, blowdrying, chemical conditioners, and no shampoo!) but this might be too extreme for most people here.
