I have the reverse of everyone else`s problem (at least that I can find). I want to color my hair that has not turned gray, but leave the gray showing (its a beautiful silver!). The other hair has slowly turned med-light auburn and it looks hideous. I want it dark for the contrast. Is there any perm color that will NOT cover gray. Mine takes color well, and there is just too much to partition it off and protect it. Its about 50%.

Where is the grey in your hair??/ If its your bangs or near the front you could wrap it in tin foil and than dye the rest of your hair that way.
Inches don`t matter
