I've been blonde before and let me tell you, it sure was a journey!
After being blonde, (many, many diffrent shades) I had decided to go black, (I was pregnant and didn't want to have to retouch my roots. Naturally I'm dark haired.) and now about a year later I want to return blonde again. Now BLACK is hell to get out of your hair, let me tell you, but here is the steps I'm taking... and here are the results... (may not work for everyone.)

I pre-lightned my hair using Feria Hi-lift browns. It didn't work, the black stuck, and the washed out black turned reddy....

Then I used Garnier 100% extra bleaching kit to achieve the color I am now wearing.... (I left it in about 20 mins MAX, due to the fact I didn't want it ORANGE or any lighter...)and then in about a day or two I'm going to use Light Ash Blonde to lighten it a little more and balance out the red tones.. so here is the before and after... it can be done, and my hair is in fine shape. But I doubt these steps could or would work for everyone...

using the ASH it will lighten and tone... OTC so can be done. Except if you want to go platinum... (then its a bit of a struggle and it can be rather damaging and it'll never look PROF. done. I know I've done it...)
Right now it's a dark strawberry blonde sorta. In the pic you can't see the red tone as much....

I've actually gone back to the way it was when I started the whole blonde process...I thought it would be harder then this...
heres the hair in natural light. Using ash will work wonders... i kinda like it this way but my boyfriend doesn't... it needs to be toned down a bit.

Wow, I'm impressed!  I love your color!  Now I'm tempted to try it at home!  I don't know though, I seem to have horrible luck with that kind of thing.  I was planning on dyeing my hair a darker brown color tomorrow but now you've got me having second thoughts.. hahaha :)

Good job!!  Your hair looks great!  AND, you're gorgeous!

Heres the true color. I was using a webcam camera before. Ifinally got a digital camera... the color may be a bit darker due to the color of the door. It's weird how color works....  the light ash application contained peroxide so I thought ti would make it lighter, it didn't do a bloody thing. :(

The color is a little too dark for me, I was going for a more blonde look. Right now it's like dark blonde with some light pieces.... I'm going to go to a salon and get it lighter.

But I'm surprised I got from black to this in one step. :)

Very pretty...and your hair's so shiny & healthy looking.

The peroxide won't lighten color - you'd have to use bleach.  Short of a salon job a heavy all over highlight w/bleach & then toning it would give you a lighter look.  You could use a blue-violet base toner if it ends up w/ too much orange.

I'm naturally med/light brown and love blonde but never could get it quite right without killing my hair.  Just went back to blonde from red (was red for a little over 2yrs so was ready for something new),and it was a process.  I hated using bleach but it was a necessary evil.  It's hard to work with your own hair in a mirror, I need two or 3 more hands and a 360 degree mirror!

Uh... I used bleach, that's all. A OTC bleaching kit, and left it on for a short time. I used Light Ash to tone a little but I dont' think it worked, adn I use purple shampoo, but I don't see much of a dif.
I'm going to do highlights in the front.  My hair has been so processed, I am not afraid of using bleach, I'm more cautious about it. LOL
