QuoteReplyTopic: Does shaving facial hair really make it grow back thicker? Posted: April 30 2001 at 11:05am
I`m trying to find a positive answer to this question. Many books I`ve read say this is an old wives` tale. But a guy who knows a lot about science sez it`s true, coz the shaving stimulates blood vessels in your face. Does anyone know the real answer? I want a thicker beard.
This isn`t exactly true or untrue. Essentially, shaving hair does NOT make it grow thicker, but it FEELS thicker, because when you shave it (if you cut the hair at a 90 degree angle, as opposed to on an angle - which could depend on the razor you use) you are producing a blunt end on the hair. Generally, if it has grown long, it may have split ends, and thus the tips will be thinner than the roots of the hair. Cutting the hair will produce ends that are just as thick as the roots. But no, there is no stimulation of blood vessels. After all, jogging stimulates the blood vessels to your face, and you don`t see athletes with extraordinarily thick hair (on average).
Actually, some athletes do have thicker facial hair - they`re the ones on steroids... But no, shaving doesn`t really make a difference for men; their facial hair is thicker anyway. However, your post did remind me of a girlfriend I had in `79 - she had downy hair on her upper lip and shaved it once - big mistake. It kept growing back faster and thicker and she had to keep shaving it all the time with sadly diminishing returns. So I would say no for men, yes for women!
