I used to have red(as in Fire engine red, sort of) hair until reecently when I decided to try and go for a more orangey shade. Two attempts didn't seem to work out, I ended up with bright red again. I almost got there this time, but it's not "vibrant" enough. It's hard to explain but I don't want it to look like a "natural" shade I want it to be the same colour as "natural" red in some ways but much more vibrant; not through shine but tone, but not flat out manic panic reddish orange either. I'm very specific!

I think my hair might be too dark for the colour I want though, orange is a little lighter than red after all, generally. If I bleach, will it lighten my colour as well as strip? Not sure how long I can wait for a fade. I need to redo my roots soon anyway.

Hi Rosalie,

If the shade you're going for is lighter, then you'll need to use bleach first - or a color remover (loreal has one at drugstores, or Sally's has them too).

Not being able to see your hair and what you want to end up with it's hard to tell whether the color remover would remove enough.  Bleach would be the most sure way and yes, it will strip the color that's on there & lighten your hair.  You'd have to keep a close eye on it to not lift it too far and it can be really tough to work with bleach yourself so be prepared or maybe see if someone can help you.

Applying color over the color you already have won't do anything to change it.  Color won't lift color, only bleach will.  Then your hair will have an even base for whatever shade you choose to put on.

I'm looking to lighten it. I don't care what happens to the colour as I'll be dying over it and I can't see anything but red orange or blonde emerging. I'm just wondering if I bleach it, will it become notably lighter without damaging it too much.

If you look for a "bleach bath" "bleach cap" on this board it might help out a bit.  It's basically equal shampoo, bleach, and developer left on for 10 mins (or however long it takes, check frequently) to lighten color few levels

The problem with this is that you have to mix most bleaches in a bottle and then it can't be stored. How do I get around this?

I also need to do my roots pretty soon...
