QuoteReplyTopic: Suggestions on taming wavy hair.... Posted: January 21 2007 at 8:19am
I have rather long naturally wavy hair.. It's pretty thick as well.. I've been reading this site, and have come up with some great tips on how to straighten my hair effectively. I currently do have a straightener & pretty much don't leave the house without using it.
but.....
I'd like the option to wear my hair naturally wavy... without it looking frizzy and sloppy. I don't like having a very "product" feel...
On top of suggestions for products, would there be any benifit from say..using some sort of curling method to aid the waves in forming smoothy or something to that effect..
I can't thank anyone enough for any advice they can offer.. THANK you!!!
HEre's an idea of what i wake up to if i sleep with my hair wet... now my question is how do i manage it near the roots & the ends to make it look clean & not like i just got out of bed?? If i brush it it just frizzez & if i leave it it looks messy...

Put it up in a bun when its damp and take it out when its dry. I say damp cuz if you do it when your hair is wet it will take HOURS. You could also try braiding it or putting some serum in it.

thanks, but i was thinking more of how to get a "polished" look with it like say for work.....
i woke up with my hair like the photos just by sleeping normally... what i need is suggestions for what to use that won't weigh my hair down, but will give me less "out of bed" look to it...

Some people use oils (sparingly, not so much that the hair gets lank) to help smooth wave and curls. Some others use lots of a moisture-infusing conditioner to get the desired effect. The good news about these solutions is that they don't need to be clarified. Serums do work well for some people, but serums tend to be heavily-laden with silicones, which, if not frequently clarified, will build up an impenetrable seal on the strands until they get dry and brittle.
[Edited to Add: You may be able to enhance the curls (when desired) by using rag rollers. AnaisSatin, who frequents the Long Hair Support Forum, has detailed instructions.]

Buy some large rollers and roll your hair when it is damp not wet. Let it airdry some or use your blowdryer briefly to get the bulk of the wetness out of your hair. I do this, and I have hair like yours. It really manages my waviness a lot and decreases the frizzes.

First of all, let me say your hair is gorgeous! I encourage you to wear it naturally often. It's beautiful.
For styling products, I use aloe vera gel (yes, like the kind you use as a lotion for your skin). It will smooth the hair without making it stiff or crunchy.
I always need a leave-in spray conditioner with every wash. The leave-in settles my poofy hair down. I use sweet almond oil rubbed on my boar bristle brush to smooth each section of hair before I roll it up. I just brush the latter portion of my hair but not close to the roots. The real trick to all of it is not to roll your hair when it is too wet. Let it dry some via natural or blowdryer. If you roll it too wet, it will take f-o-r-e-v-e-r to dry if it is really thick.
I also like clear aloe vera for smoothing updos. With one drop of oil mixed with it in my palm, it really makes your hair shine.

hairbraider ~ thank you!! :o) I woke up with it that way after washing the night before and using a product called Damage Therapy from Aveda.
I'm so glad to of found this site... everyone on here seems to have alot of experience with different things i can try out. I've seen the aloe use suggested a few times now & definitely will pick some of that up. I think i like Pkj's suggestion to mix a drop of oil in there.. I purchased aveda's oil with jojoba in it, so I may try a drop of that in there..
Pkj ~ thank you for the details! I think this will be great for the days i really would like some extra curl and bounce :) and yes.. my hair is THICK, so i'll make sure it's not to damp still before rolling it up.
