QuoteReplyTopic: Changing Perms Posted: January 21 2007 at 10:13pm
I have been using Motions regular perm for years. I think my hair has become somewhat immune to the product, as it seems that my perm doesn't last as long as it use to. In addition, I think that the Motions perm leave my hair "too straight". I guess I would have what is considered "Type 4" hair. Although I have a lot of hair it is very fine, and it sheds easily. I have friend with a simular hair tpye, that uses a no lye kid perm "PCJ". I am seriously considering changing to perm to the no lye kid perm to see if my hair reacts simular as hers.
My question is, does anyone know if this is a good idea? Will changing my perm, or going from a Lye perm to a No Lye perm cause extreme hair damage, given the texture of my hair? Does anyone have any suggestions for me, they will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm not a hairstylists and neither are the people I have gotten my info from (my family), but I have always been told NEVER EVER change your perm types (lye to no-lye or vice versa) until your hair grows out. My younger sister put a lye perm on her hair after putting on a no-lye perm (she was trying to switch to lye perms) and her hair has been very damaged to the point that you can visually SEE the damage done. Nothing was working to get her hair back in order so she had to cut it. I'd advise you to change perm brands or from calcium hydroxide to magnesium hydroxide (or vice versa) before changing to no-lye. I believe that sometimes our hair does get immune to the same perms (and shampoos and conditioners) to the point that a perm just doesn't work.
Another thing you might want to consider is that when you go to the salon to get your hair done, they use lye perms and if you don't then it can be somewhat of a hassle to get a stylist to do your hair with no-lye perms. You know? So, I'd suggest that you either change brands for a while or go either stronger (try Super if it's not perming enough) or milder (try Mild if it's "too straight"). But I don't suggest you go from lye to no lye unless you are willing to let your hair grow the lye perm out first. And don't forget to use a good deep conditioner to seal the deal with your perm. When I do a deep conditioner with my perm, my hair gets straighter and it feels softer.
