mid-growing-hair-out blues

ok - so I`ve hit that middle stage where my hair, which I usually wear short but have decided to grow out, has reached the middle stage where it looks goofy. I have very fine, straight, limp hair. (I can get a really good bowl cut if I want)
So what do I do? Its getting too long to wear totally messed up, which is what I`ve been doing.
(You see, I recently started modelling, and I`ve been urged to grow out my hair)
Should I trim until the top part gets long enough? Or bite the bullet and look a fool until it`s all grown out.
