QuoteReplyTopic: What would be my best option? (photos inc.) Posted: February 03 2007 at 1:21pm
Hi there
It probably seems like a pain to ask questions like this when there is already a wealth of information linked on the forums, but the more I read the more confused I get, and the things my hairdresser says just sends my brain into overdrive, so I'd love if I could have direct feedback from girls with experience. I'm so sorry as I know there must be a lot of repetitive questions like these but it's so daunting reading through it all and trying to make the best decision.
Obviously human hair seems the more desirable option, as I suppose you can wash and style it more like real hair. However my hairdresser (who doesn't do extensions) said that synthetic hair damages your hair less, but I don't understand why would this be? Is it because human hair is heavier and so weighs your natural hair down more?
I also colour my hair, is it possible to keep colouring at least the roots while wearing synthetic extensions?
Then I read online that single bond extensions are better, more secure and that hairdressers often make more money doing weft extensions because the clients constantly have to go back and have them repaired when they've come apart. Then my hairdresser again said that weft extensions are less damaging, so I'm so thrown over what to think! I keep hearing horror stories of people who are left with barely any hair from extensions. Is this more common for people who have them constantly refitted, or can having them in just for a few months - then having them removed and going back to your natural hairlength - still have trouble with bald patches?
I don't know if the length/thickness of extensions has a huge impact on hair damage. I've included a photo of my current hair, and of a wig that is the style I would like extensions in. I know I will have to grow my hair a bit, but can anyone tell me how much longer it would need to be? I'm hoping it would be possible to get extensions around June, though May would be even better.
the sentence: 'synthetic hair is less damaging than human hair' just doesnt make sense to me
talk to ten different people and you most likely get ten different opinions on which METHOD of applying hair extensions is more damaging
all over this forum, the concensus is that CORRECT application, care, and removal determine the health of your own hair during extension wear
soooo, i'll start with MY opinion (based on MY hair wearing): less damaging for me: wefts (with LiquidGold and Protac/flex tape), more comfortable: wefts, able to acheive adequate volume: wefts...easy to do myself:wefts
and yes i'd imagine by may you will have enough hair to hide the wefts/bonds whichever you choose
hehe, so basically - you'd recommended wefts? ; ) do you have a preference over real & synthetic?
That's actually really helpful. I'm probably stupid but I think I assumed that since single bonds takes more time (and so probably costs more) then that must be the best options. Naive huh? I know I'm probably going to get a lot of different opinions, but it would still be nice to hear direct experiences rather than black & white "factual" information because you just never know what to believe lol.
The wig is just a cheapo one from an ebay store. It looks ok in the photos but IRL is HIDEOUS. It was only about $20 lol. The hair is really plastic and you can see the cap/hooks/hairline, and any photos taken in flash show are hilarious because all you focus on is a bright shiney wig and nothing else lol!
thank you sooo much!

I think its a matter of preference really. And I agree with nursie, correct and careful application, care and removal are important things with ANY method.
Single bonds do take more time to install, so cost more to install, but last longer. Weft bonding methods dont take much time to install less expensive, (easy enough for most DIYers) but dont last as long, so will require more frequent re-dos.
Are you going platinum blonde? If so you may want to consider synthetic hair, I have found you can bleach out you hair, and the synthetic doesn't get all messed up from it... You'll want a thermo fibre, if youre looking for WHITE http://plastikhaar.ch/shop/product_info.php?products_id=328 That is the hair to get! Someone told me the owner can also special order any color in POWERLON as long as you order a minimum... IMHO, you may want to think about being a DIY'er that website link you posted doesn't seem helpful at all. If your thinking about human hair and DIY I would recommend Bohyme silky straight. www.hairextensions101.com has them in hand tied wefts, which are easy to install. There are alot of demos floating around here... If you're thinking about strand by strand, I would recommned silicone lined mirco-rings, but you'll need a friends help to do these...and they do slip, and you'll need special tools and hair (tipped), which can be more expensive than wefts, also, human can will damage easier when coloring.

Brokendoll, I absolutely love the way that wig looks! You look gorgeous
in it! If you want that style, you will need an entire head of
individual extensions. I would not recomend that unless you have
unlimited funds. It's going to be really expensive and you're going to
be a slave to this salon. IMO I would wait for your hair to grow out
and then do the weft method. I've never used synthetic but some people
love it. It's cheap so you can try it without spending a lot. I'm not
sure why human hair would cause damage. I've never heard that before?
If you feel your wig isn't an every day type of wig then I would try to
find a good quality wig that looks the same because girl, you look
stunning in it.

Broken Doll, I started a year and a half ago with hair shorter than yours. Just like you, I found a wig in the style I wanted to grow out to. I wore the wig for five months to get enough growth to cover extensions (barely) and then started gluing in wefts myself. I think the weft method is better for the growing out process you're going through and the look you want. Learn to do them yourself (very easy to do with wefts) and get hair you can reuse... it can cost very little to wear extensions that look fabulous. Once you start wearing weft extensions you can finish growing out your hair while still having the style you love. It gets easier to make your hair look great as your own gets longer, but it is possible to have a great style with wefted extensions during the grow-out process. Check out the pictures I've taken during the last year-and-a-half illustrating my hair journey:
Love the colors. It can be hard getting good quality platinum in real hair. I will be posting picks in a couple days. I use a mix of satin & perl weiss. If you want even more platinum go with platin & perl weiss. I use synthetic, I find it lasts 3 months & I do my own custom wefting, see the no sew weft demo. I feel I have it down now. I love the feel of it. I recommend using protac and doing your own install with synthetic the first time till you get down the location of the install. & how to layer it.
I love human but I completely botched my first install & layering. I perfer to do my own. I do touch up my roots when I have a full head. The layered wefts make it easier to put it in your hair, I do wash it a good 4 times with a clarifying shampoo & also stay in the shower for about 30 minutes making sure it's all rinsed.
Depends on what you prefer, human or synthetic. It's the intall & maintenance & touch ups that keep from damage happening. Wefts add a lot more hair.

I had glue in extensions and they were murder to get out. I also have a friend who paid £550 for her glue in's and they ripped out her hair. We were doing a sew-in on her and it was so hard coz there were bald patches all over her scalp. I love my sew in's coz you can add a lot of hair and although you have to redo it more often than a glue in I find that it leaves my hair in nice condition when the braids r taken out and your hair grows super fast.

Yikes, what glue did you use when you had your glue-in extensions?

I agree with these gals, correct application, good upkeep and correct take down are the most important things when talking of extensions. Human or Synth, it's really up to you. Some people love sythn, some hate it. I personally hate it. For me it is very heavy and tangly.
From the photo, it looks like you are gonna have to grow out that top layer a good 4 inches before you have enough hair to cover any bond.
I like weft installs right now. I have a lot of breakage from a DIY strand install. I've been using protac tapes and bohyme bodywave off and on for a little while and it always amaxing me how quickly my hair grows while my extensions are in!

If your hair grows at a normal rate, I think by May or June you should have enough (barely) to cover wefted extensions. You'll have to have a lot of layering of the extension hair at first, lots of extension hair up high, and will probably have to spray the top layer to keep the wefts covered for a few months until your top gets longer. You can see by my first pics that my top layer didn't blend perfectly at first, but I didn't have a mushroom head, either. LG or Protac with wefts is a great way to grow out a short do without having that awkward phase in the middle.
Here's to the end of my BAD HAIR LIFE!

What about just making a wig? I think I seen a few tutorials sumwhere. Not sure if it was this site or the black hair media forum. Then just wack it on and go 2 the hairdressers n get them 2 style it the way u want. Or wefts and a closure piece until your hair grows a little bit more.
