hi,
has anyone used an iron, the kind to iron clothes with, to straighten their hair.
My friend has long hair and told me she takes the iron puts it on the lowest possible heat, puts her hair down, she only straightens the lower half because thats all thats curly. Also she puts a sheet between her hair and the iron. IS THIS SAFE??? can you use this for your hair?? PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!thanks

My 6th grade teacher swore by it. she said the key is to keep the setting low. she also used a thin towel (like a sheet) over her hair. These towels are not terry towels, we used them on the farm for straining milk and for dish towels - they are like cloth diapers.

I wouldn`t suggest it. You should use a device designed to straighten hair. Using an iron is dangerous.

As a child of the 60s, I remember very well young women ironing their hair. Long straight hair, like Joan Baez`s, was what the girls I went to college with wanted. The procedure they used was as you described it: lowest setting and protected with a cloth. I didn`t see any damage done but I don`t think they did it every day either. I would think a good deep conditioner and keeping the ironing to a mimimum would be a must.

Yuck, don`t try that! There`s a very high risk of burning your hair and scalp. As for straightening irons, I don`t recommend them. They leave your hair feeling stringy and dried out. (from my personal experience). You`re much better off using a good straightening balm, heat protectant, round brush, and a high-wattage blow-dryer. Hope I helped! :)

I have used both a clothing iron, and an actually hair straightening iron. I have to admit that the clothing one works much much better than the Conair one, and was much quicker. Unfortuanetly they are bopth really damaging. My advice would be that if you want your hair dead straight then use the cloth. iron, but only do this for special ocassions (at the most, twice a month) and then really deeop condtion your hair after. I know so many girls that do it almost everyday, and their hair is fried! So just don`t use it too often!

Either type of iron is damaging but the ones designed to be used on hair, like Babyliss or Conair are much safer to control. They are designed to straighten hair and the technology has come a long way int he past 30 years when people only had clothes irons to use.

Some of you mentioned the danger of burns to the scalp. I had an email recently from the mom of a teen who burned her hair at the scalp while trying to do the iron thing with a friend after school one night. Unfortunately she scorched her hair and it had to be cut.

So please, if you want to use an iron, use a commercial one. And please read all instructions.

Also, use a good leave in conditioner on your hair. This helps block some of the damage. It also is a good overall protection from the environmental toxins.

Best wishes,
Karen
