Last year I discussed the proliferation of red hair in summer, this year the world seems even rosier! On a recent vaction to Vienna, Austria (a conservative city by nature) I was astounded not just by the numbers of dyed red- and pinkheads, but the across-the-board demographics. Young or (gasp) old, long or short, female or (gasp again) male, they were all there. Why red? Why not orange, or blue, I wondered, and where did this come from and is it only in summer?
On returning home through London I again could not help noticing the same trend. Now I think it`s great and if I had a hat I would take it off to them. Yet where I live in the backwaters of the North, you would hardly see one unless they were a bona fide punk rocker, and anyone else who would dare venture out red-topped would be subject to ridicule, or worse. I wonder if this is the same in all countries.

Well phil,

Here in Texas the trend continues. I believe red is the most favored color because while it is different and (gasp!) shocking, it is also more conservative than the other colors out there. Forinstance, I have noticed many of the teens hanging out at the skate park are favoring neon green and blue, while some girls are doing the "dye your hair white blond and tip it with blue" thing. There isn`t much ridicule, just the view that "hm, they`re rather daring and expressive." At least, that`s what I think. My roomie`s boyfriend plays with his hair often going from smurf blue with neon yellow bangs to maroon with white tips. It`s pretty neat when we expect him to come over because we never know what color his head is going to be! Plus, he is a drama major and plays in a rock band, so that may be why it is acceptable. But over all, I think that those who have an alternative color on their head are looked at as experimental, young or even edgy. Hope that helps ya.
