yes, it's silicone.  usually named in the ingredient list with words that end in -cone (such as dimethicone, cyclomethicone, etc).  they coat the hair shaft to make it shiny and smooth, but eventually build up and seal the hair, keeping out the much needed moisture.  i can't use shampoos or conditioners that contain them because my hair immediately starts behaving badly.  some people's hair responds well to -cones, so they go ahead and use them and clarify every month or so to prevent build-up.

If you don't use a lot of shine-enhancing styling products, I think using a little silicone isn't a problem. I wear braids and only use stuff like Fantasia IC Straightening Serum every once in a while. But I can imagine it would feel yucky if used very often. I do use Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Shampoo which has some dimethicone in it but its not a major ingredient and I only wash when i need to.

If you need shine badly:
lotioncrafter.com has a silicone alternative called Crodomol STS
and
I think Aubrey Organics makes natural shine-enhancing products
and
I've made my own treatments using MSM externally and had really nice results with smoothness & shine.
I'm in!
