I`m not pregnant yet, but thinking ahead I want to do one last "permanent" dye before I sink into deep paranoia about hair color for nine months. I had a deep red (a la X-Files Scully) from Redken Shades but my roots are dishwater blonde so we tried to lighten it with a foil followed by an all over kind of strawberry blonde. My hair now is dark blonde roots + a yellow/orange toned mix that I alternately think is okay or hate depending on my mood (well, the blonde stuff does make me look younger). Anyway, looking for suggestions for what I can do, either to make it look okay enough to live with it for 9 months of roots or some "safe" idea where I could add a temporary or semi-permanent to the roots while pregnant. By the way, I loved Shades because it kept my hair so healthy, but I moved and my new stylist does not use Shades; she tried an auburn demi on my hair and it washed out within days and my hair is starting to get unhealthy between that and the foil. By the way, I`m not even sure if Shades is a permanent or semi-permanent and no one can tell me if it`s safe in pregnancy (other stylists suggested it`s okay as long as I choose lighter colors?!).

I don`t understand this paranoia about not coloring your hair during pregnancy. I highlighted my hair during both of my pregnancies and my children are fine. So did I lot of my friends. And a lot of celebrities have continued to color their hair duirng pregnancy and have healthy babies. My Ob/GYN said not to worry about coloring your hair. If you continue to use the same type of dye that you used pre-pregnancy and have not had any allergies or other adverse reactions to it, you can continue to use it during pregnancy without any problems.

you know what, i`m a nursing student and there is NOTHING i can think of that would be a reason to NOT color your hair during pregnancy... i mean YES some of the chemicals seep into your scalp during the process, but that`s true with any number of things (like dishwashing soap...hair depilatories...LOTION even!)
SO unless you were plannig on DRINKING your hair dye *lol* I dont think there should be a major problem... (of cousre if you develope a sensitivity to the color, I"d suggest having a stylist do it so as little dye will touch your scalp as possible)

ANyway, that`s my 2 cents!
:-)

whoops! i just read Karen`s article on nnontoxic hair dyes and discovered that the FUMES are what theyr`re worried about, not the absorbtion in the skin.
My advice? Again, go to a stylist and have her paint color o with her brush and that should avoid some of the fumage and/or do it ouside on a semi-windy day facing the other direction :)
There. I got the other side out now :)

i know you are talking about stylist, but ive been using nutriesse at home...the kind with botanicals...and it doesnt give off any fumes at all. i only notice the stronger fumes with the really cheap home hair dyes...ive never had it done in a salon, cuz ive always had good results at home. but even with karens article, and no offense to karen b/c i like her a lot lol....but i dont see how it can be any more dangerous then pumping your own gas and breathing in the fumes, or cleaning with typical household cleaners and breathing in those fumes. it might sound corny lol, but if you are really worried about it, just wear one of those little face masks...it might make you stand out a little in the salon, but it will keep you from directly inhaling the fumes.
