QuoteReplyTopic: Can you shampoo too much? Posted: April 03 2007 at 5:59pm
I have a problem. I shampoo my hair every two days and my hair type is 4a/4b. I use Cream of Nature Shampoo and Infusium 23 Leave-In Conditioner. It is safe for a person with a 4a/4b type hair type to shampoo so much? And unfortunately, I'm not using any moisturizers because I don't what's safe for me. What are the best products for a person with 4a/4b hair type? I'm thinking about going natural so I really need help on this one!!!
Yes, you can shampoo too much because it dries out your hair. Moisture is extremely important to us curly-girls! I use shampoo only twice a week, and use conditioner on the days in between.
I can't answer your questions about the best moisturizing products because my hair isn't African, so I'm not sure what to tell you on that. I do love shea butter though. I know many African women use that. It comes from Africa! I smooth a tiny bit of pure raw shea butter on my ends after washing, while my hair is still wet. (works lovely for skin too, btw)
ITA with hairbraider you can shampoo too much but for my hair 3c/4a 2x a week is fine but I space it out every 3 days not 2 (and I deep condition each time). Or like hairbraider suggested conwashes. Also Infusium 23 has protein that could too heavy to use 2x a week. If the product works for ur hair maybe decrease to 1x a week.
You can also do a search for favorite leave-ins mine are Salerm 21 or Neutrogena silk touch sealed with an oil such as Wild growth oil. HTH
I agree with the above posters, there is such a thing as shampooing too much. It dries my hair out when I use it too often. you need to replace the moisture you lost with a good moisturizing Con, leave-in and moisturizer. I only use shampoo (organic which doesn't have harsh sulfates) every two weeks or whenever I use hair gel and I conditioner wash everyday. I always follow up with a leave-in (Cantu) and moisturizer (Profectiv)
Have you heard of the curly girl routine? From what I understand they
mostly use conditioner to clean their hair, since curly hair tends to
be drier than straight hair. It helps reduce frizz and makes the hair
softer and the curls more defined.
Thats what I do! If my hair is feeling dry I will condition wash it everynight for about a week alternating between moisturizing and protein conditioners. Then I will take the time to shamp, deep cond, apply moisture and flat iron. My hair loves the added moisture!
I agree with the girls, you can shampoo too much. I rarely shampoo but wash with conditioner almost daily with Pantene Hydrating Curls and everytime I wash my hands in the bathroom I run my wet hands through my hair. 4's can go much longer than daily maybe once or twice a week but you need a good leave-in conditioner or something that super moisturizes your hair. Try Pantene's hydrating and curly hair products. Also something with shea butter, I heard that hemp products work good too. Malibu makes a hand protector/lotion called Hemp for very dry skin. This stuff is great. You all have to try it, make sure it's the one for very dry skin. I'm going to try it on my hair again, the first time I had other stuff in it too and it didn't come out well. I have to see they make Hemp hair products and let you gals know.
Hi Hungry for hair......change your SHAMPOO and your technique. purchase Ultra black hair growth book, UBH Publications website. You will learn a lot about your hair and shampoo for afro amer hair. we grew up on every 2 week....NOT....we need to wash a min of 1 per week, but really every 3-4 days...many of cant because of schedules....but if you did that, you your hair would be so much more soft and not dried out....these are the steps 1. only shampoo 1 time, do not keep repeating it, you are stripping your hair of what ever nutrients it has 2. alternate your conditioners, 1 time regular kind, next time protien or deep protien conditioner.....3 FINAL rinse- 1/2 teaspoon Cider vinegar and 1 cup of water...this will get your ph level on your scalp back to normal. and allow the natural oil glands in your head to release natural oils, that is why you do not put anything on your scalp other than jojoba oil, why because it is the only oil that does not clog our pores. Gotta watch out for Shea butter, it is good but can clog pores. yur hair will not smell like vinegar, so dont worry about that, just pour it on hair and light rinse again. 4. air dry to a damp, then blow dry if you have too, but put a blow dry condi tioner on it.....I use Virgin Coconut oil (do not cake it on, rub it on your hands, watch it melt in yur hand before your eyes, then make sure you rub all the way down hair shaft) you will be surprised in about 2-4 washing the change in your hair.....try it.....the only thing, I do not Hotcurl or put any other heat on my hair, so all I can' tell you is limit heat styling tools
try it let me know...this has change many friends of mines hair, I am getting scubby snacks....Just kidding......Nothing beats a failure but a try. RIGHT. and I dont know my hair type
Oh I forot to tell you.....water is a form of moisture, believe it or not, so when you put the jojoba or coco oil on the wet or damp hair, it is holding that moiture in, it truely is....you will notice that your hair will not dry out, if you cant wash until the end of the week, that reply oils as needed, your hair will talk to you lolol. also I aint on no healthy diet, as a matter of fact I need to drink more water, I dont...so I still have issues that if I work on my consumption I may have more success than I already have had. LOLOL read up on your jojoba oil and virginCoconut oils and how these 2 oils are the safest for out bodies...remember what you put on you goes inside you. go to EWG>org and read on SKIN DEEP, you will proably throw everything out I did. Starting with condtioners, I have been using a healthy non toxic shampoo for yrs. Aubrey.....I do not buy any products from th beauty supply, when you see what they all contain, you will see why you are constantly fighting dry hair syndrome and unhealthy hair which only looks good when you first leave a salon. LOLOL

Yes! I've found that my hair needs water more than anything! So the only time I but oil or butter on it is when it's wet so it holds the water in. I even wet it with a spray bottle or under the faucet on days between washing.
I've heard that shampooing the hair daily makes it grow faster. In fact I found this on the Crown and Glory website.
I have been trying this technique and haven't noticed my hair becoming more dry. But I do notice my ends seem to split more easily. I am trying it again this week. But this time am prepooing my ends with liberal amounts of oil and moisturizer. I try my best to keep the shampoo only on the scalp. Then apply a rinse out cond avoiding the scalp but coating the bottom 3/4 of my hair.
Has anyone found daily washing to aid in faster hair growth??
Hey ladyflash, I need to experiment again after I get my braids taken out but before braiding I was cowashing 1-2x a week and rinsing daily and it helped me to retain length and I think it helped my hair grow because I only get 1/2 inch a month but after 4 or so weeks I had a new inch! But I need to make sure i was not tripping lol and try it again. I would not shampoo my hair daily tho because that is way too drying. During the summer I am going to alt between cowashing/rinsing daily and braids to help with retaining length.

Shampoo just strips dirt and oils out of your hair. Which is why it
would make sense that you have more splits, but not that it would make
it grow faster. The only reason why this would make your hair grow
faster, would be the scalp stimulation caused by massaging the shampoo
into your hair. THis is a secondary effect obviously, and you don't
need to shampoo your hair daily in order to get scalp stimulation. It
is possible that there could be some ingredients in certain natural
shampoos that would help stimulate the scalp, like cheyenne pepper
(I've heard this helps, don't really know though) or something. But you
could just use those ingredients instead of stripping your hair with
shampoo.
Besides getting the adequate nutrition, scalp stimulation is probably
the only other way to aid growth, besides preventing damage which would
cancel out the growth. You can do this by massaging the scalp, nd there
may be certain things you can put directly on the scalp to increase
blood flow. Exercise also gets the blood flowing to the scalp.
Also, it sounds like you are shampooing the ends of your hair too?
NEVER do that! Even if you still think shampoo could help with growth,
how would shampooing the ends help the roots grow? All this will do is
horribly strip the ends, since we don't give our natural oils enough
time to reach even close to the ends.
By prepooing the ends I meant applying oil and moisturizers to dry hair first then proceeding to shampoo the scalp avoiding my ends as best as I can. I use a mild shampoo diluted with water so the shampoo wont be too harsh. I havn't noticed any drying. In fact my hair looks shiny and feels soft. At the same time if this is doing nothing to aid in hair growth I'd like to know cause I don't want to wash my hair everyday just cause. Its time consuming!
BlackHoney,
Hey girl! When you try it again let me know your results! When I did it before I felt like I was getting faster growth too, but I was new at it and would wash all my hair and I think that was too drying. Co washing is a good idea but I thought the point was to keep the scalp clean because product build-up is what can stunt growth.
Anyway, My final day of washing everyday for one week is tomorrow. I let you guys know what happens. (dun, dun, dun )
Hey ladyflash, yea I need to make sure I was not tripping lol but co washing is suppose to help keep the scalp clean too. I apply a cone free conditioner on dry hair let it sit for few and then massage my scalp using fingerpads and nails to clean the scalp while rinsing out the conditioner. My hair feels clean after doing this but I need to still shampoo cuz I still use cone products in my hair, there is no way I could do a no poo routine lol
btw I know of a modified cowash that mixes conditioner and a mild shampoo that might be a gentleir alt. I have yet to try it though....
I found when I shampooed very often, my hair dried out, turned redder, and began to split but then again I was using Garnier Fructis' Sodium Laureth Sulfate loaded Shine shampoo. The more acidic shampoos are pretty good. Elasta QP's Creme conditioning shampoo is one and Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny shampoo uses a higher grade cationic surfactant- Sodium Myreth Sulfate which doesn't give me any trouble.
It's funny you ask that because I used to wash my hair on a daily basis and yes I shampooed. Than I read this book that said no more shampoos just condition the hair and you'll get moisturized strand and I did it and yes my strands are quite moisturized. The only problem for me, which isn't really a problem, is my ends curl for some unknown reason and it looks like I have slightly curly hair even though I have a relaxer on and my texture is 3c/4a.
The point being try it out use a good conditioner, VO5 is pretty cheap and good also. See how your hair reacts.
MY mother bids me bind my hair
With bands of rosy hue,
Tie up my sleeves with ribbons rare,
And lace my bodice blue.
