What a blast from the past!! I thought that schools stopped teaching this technique. It was very popular in the 1920s and involves the use of a hot curling iron. The bar was heated over a rectangular shaped gas burner about six or seven inches long and two inches wide. Incidentally, the Marcel Wave started in France when Mr. Marcel, a French beauty operator, followed his mother`s natural wave to get the natural effect. It is said that a well done Marcel Wave could last up to a week. It fell out of favor because it takes too long to learn and finger waving didn`t run the risk of burning the hair. When the wave was in vogue, women would get one for a big party, then hurry back to the shop in a day or two to get a retrace for another party, or between times before their next shampoo. A very nice discussion of a similar technique can be found at: http://www.revampvintage.com/10samwave.html Good luck and happy waving!!
