QuoteReplyTopic: dry hair/greasy scalp Posted: September 11 2001 at 2:28pm
Help please! My hair has been a mess my whole life. I have an itchy, greasy, waxy scalp and very dry and fragile hair. gentle tugging can break my hair easily. It is very thick (every hairdresser has said that i have the thickest hair they have ever seen), coarse and wavy. Completely unmanagable and embarrassingly ugly.
Clarifying and anti-dandruff shampoos do not eliminate the scalp scum and only dry my hair further. Moisturizing and normal shampoos and all conditioners seem to make the scum worse. (I only condition the ends)
I try so hard to take care of my hair: I never blowdry my hair. Minimize the styling and brushing. Pick or wide-tooth comb when wet. It`s thinned and layered to get some of the thickness out of it.
Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to balance my hair and make it more managable?

Sorry to hear about your problem. I can understand your situation as my sister also has an oily scalp and dry hair. We tried just about every product on the market without much success. Several months ago, a colleague recommended we try Rene Furterer and it made all the difference. Her hair is in wonderful shape now and the oil on her scalp is much better. The products are not cheap but our results were worth it. You can read about her recommendations at http://www.beansbeauty.com/rfoilyscalp2.htm Everyone`s hair is different and you may not get the results my sister did but it is worth a try. Good luck!!

I can support Budokan`s recommendation. I had a customer with the same problem you have and nothing seemed to work (she even tried some home remedies) until we tried Rene Furterer. Very good products. The oil secreted by her scalp is more nearly normal now and her hair is in terrific shape. I hope you have as good a result.
another quick tip -- buy a bottle with a small tip opening on the end (similar to those that come with hairdye, they sell nicer ones at beauty supply stores), fill it with a shampoo made for the greasies, and ONLY apply to your scalp. massage gently into the scalp, and rinse (the rinsing out will clean the rest of your hair gently, as it rinses out through the ends). follow with a strong conditioner, concentrating on the ends. i`m not familiar with a lot of brands, but i adore bedhead by tigi`s moisture maniac.
i don`t care if i`m wrong, `cos right always takes too long

I would advise you to use a brush with natural bristles to distribute the oil from you scalp over the whole hair every day, but especially before shampooing (the 100 strokes, you know) but don`t tug on your scalp too much doing so. Use a all-natural shampoo (like aubrey`s), put it on the scalp only, rinse thouroughly (a couply minutes) with likewarm water, not hot! Then use a deep conditioner starting about 3 or 4 inches from you scalp down and blast with cold water. Then you can use a leave-in conditioner on you ends. you might also want to take Vitamins to improve the health of you hair. Hope this helps
