Hello,
I'm new here. I now have short hair basic style w/bangs ears cut out layered somewhat. I have a extremely short neck. From the back you can't actually see a neck. It is due to a congenital deformity. This has ALWAYS bothered me. I am now 55 and when I was a teenager I had long hair.
My question is what way should I wear my hair? I am mindful of my neck problem and I have partial mobility on one side. Alot of times people ask me if I have a stuff neck and I have to say I have a neck deformity.
I'm looking for ideas. I have tried a bob and have it short now.I do like it short but wonder how to cut the back and should I have my ears out. I have thick straight fine hair.
Thanks to all.

Hi Mab! Smile You state that you "like" short hair. In general, I think what usually makes a short haircut look pretty is a  neat napeline. **Not** buzzed, but short and soft. But, in your case, having a few layered inches *on* your neck would probably take attention from your that area which makes you self-conscious. Probably with the longer nape, you should have hair covering at least part of your ear, so it won't look mullety. (If that word is not in the Scrabble dictionary, it should be. (lol))

Really, Mab, a woman should wear her hair in *any* style that she loves, *even* above the ears. My wife is pushing 50, and she had hair past her tailbone until last week. (It's still quite long.) It looks awesome. No person worth a nickel thinks any less of someone b/c of a physical irregularity. Virtually everyone on this earth has *something* we would change if we could. I have several! My cousin's wife has one very short leg, and has trouble walking. But everyone loves her, and in part it's because she refuses to let it stop her. God Bless, Bob Wink

Bob, you are so right!  "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."  I'm with you on this one!  I used to be really self-consious about my back (scoliosis) and used my hair to cover it, I'd almost never wear my hair up.  But I saw the support my friends gave me about it all and also realized that most people don't even notice it.  I have a cousin with some physical problems and she lets it get her down so much.  It's sad because she's really pretty with a beautiful smile and the potentially wonderful personality!  But alot of people get put out with her because she has a depressing attitude.

Anyway, I like Bob's advice.  If you really do love it short, some longer layering at the back hairline would look nice.

Thanks for your encouragement and input. I guess it bothers me more than I thought. I have tried longer but people I used to work with said it looked better short.
I just don't know how to do the back. It is thick but fine. Right now I need a cut and it is below my collar. But that to most people isn't much but to me with no visible neck in the back it is. If you watch the American Idol Melinda has a short neck somewhat like mine. And I notice it. I'm sure she knows she is different but she sure can sing. You guys and girls are great to respond.

here's a couple ideas of what I meant by longer layers in the back....

I don't really care for the pieces in front of the ears here, but you could basically have it however you wanted it to look all over and still have the back cut long like this.  I've seen it lots of different ways.

Hairbraider,
Thank you for the pictures. I thought of taking a picture of the back of my hair right now. I'd need my husband to do it. I might ask him and post it. I'm not too crazy about showing my face on the internet. I need a cut but I've been waiting. If I do post it will be in the next day or 2. But I appreciate your help. I have a wedding in DC area early May and I want to get it cut soon. Not sure where I'm going. We have a business and one of my customers cuts my hair right now. She is pretty good.
Thank you so much and watch if I post the back of my hair and shoulders, I'm going to try.

I do not know how I can post pictures of my hair showing what issues I have. I have taken 2 pictures a side view and a back view.
