QuoteReplyTopic: How can I give my straight hair more "life"? Posted: April 10 2007 at 1:14am
I have my hair grown long (about halfway down my back (bangs included)). It is naturally straight.
It is really dense, however, it falls flat against my head. I've seen people who have it go up a slight ammount and then start to go down. I have never been able to replicate this. Here's a crude drawing of what I mean. I'm like the one on the left, and what I want is what is on the right
I do not know if it makes any difference in this case, but I am male. (I don't know if there's any physical difference in what hair is like.)
Also, what would be the correct word for this as "life" doesn't quite seem right?

To get some lift, you could use some gel and a hair dryer. Lift the hair up, heat it, let it cool and it should give it some lift.
The problem is your hair is so long that the weight of your hanging hair is pulling any body you may have at the scalp down. Shorter hair would help reduce the weight and give your hair more lift at the root.

This isn't always true. I know 3 people who have very straight heavy hair. All of them have it cut above shoulder length and it still hangs straight and flat. Their hair just has no volume at all, even with layers.
That's great advice though on how to get more lift on top! You might also try hanging your hair forward as you're blowdrying the roots.
Hmmm, I've never dried my hair with a dryer. I usually let it dry overnight.
How would I do what you're describing?
I can do it but I am not very good at describing how to do it. Someone else may be able to explain it better.
Basically, you want to put a styling product in your hair (gel, mousse, whatever) and comb it through.
Then, at the place you need volume, use your fingers and lift the hair up, heat it with a hair dryer, let the hair cool and the hair (with the help of the styling product) will lift away from the scalp or mold in the way you desire.
Also, as hairbraider said, you could use some product and blowdry your hair upside down, thus creating more volume.

I can tell you the way I know how to do it. You take either a large barrel curling iron or a straightning iron. Then you place it at the root of the hair (careful not to burn the scalp) and just ever so slightly roll it through the hair. Then a bit of hair spray to hold it in place. I used to do this when I parted my hair down the middle so it wasnt flat to my head.
Any suggestions on how to avoid burning my scalp? Also, what size iron would be best for this kind of thing. I could probably borrow one of my sister's or mother's but I wouldn't know which to go for, small or large.

Girl I have the answer to your problem. Get yourself a bottle of Redken Starch spray. Spray it at your roots and blow dry your hair like hairbraider explained. Or you can do it on dry hair and put in some rollers for a few minutes. You will have more volume than you know what to do with!!
You may also want to try the Redken Bodyfull line. Or try using Redken water rush (I think that is what is called). It is designed to condition hair without weighting it down.
