My hair unfortunately has a lot of splits in it, but otherwise looks good (it is about 4in past waist length). The damage is from spending the summer as a camp counselor - between my campers playing with my hair, swimming every day and having no time to condition my hair for 2 1/2 months(at the time I didn`t realize how important that was), splits were inevitable.

I read how to do a split-ends trim or dusting trim at the Long Hair Site, but I have not been able to get it to work. Basically, it said to get a 1/2 in section of hair, twist it tightly and then the split ends will stick out of the twist and then you can cut them off. You then twist the section the other way and cut off the splits. Then you go around the head in that fashion.

However, when I try it it doesn`t work quite that well. My problem is that I need the twisted section right in front of my eyes to be able to see it properly (sadly enough my eyes are already pretty weak, plus my vision is 20-250+ w/out glasses). However, the twisted section will of course twist up on itself, and if I use a hand to keep it straight, as well as a hand to hold the end(to keep it twisted), I have no hand to hold the scissors. I have tried looping it around my finger, plus all sorts of weird things to try to get it to eyelevel, to no avail.

I read posts where people mention they have done a dusting trim on themselves - I am dying to know how you managed it, as I am fresh out of ideas.

Approx once every 1-2 weeks I will sit outside or by a window with a pair of very sharp scissors and just look for splits or knotted hair. I take the hair in sections, and just start looking. ( Knotted hair where the split doesn`t start at the end but somewhere within the length. It breaks then frays.) I cut the hair approx 1/8 inch above the damage. My hair is a lot healthier and i can go longer between those "cut the hair whether they need it or not" trims.

I haven`t had a haircut (1" or more) in over a year -- at that time, I had my last layer cut out and my bangs blended into the bottom -- and my dusting was in Sept before my wedding.
