QuoteReplyTopic: Scalp issues? Posted: April 26 2007 at 10:15am
I know this might not be the right board, but I am going to ask this anyway:
I have a SEVERE flaking scalp problem. I saw on some board on this site, where someone suggested a product to put on their scalp. Could someone suggest something?
I drink lots of water, don't use particularly drying shampoos, and my diet isn't TOO low fat. I don't know if that helps, but I need help desperately!
I also get my hair colored professionally. I know that may not have anything to do with it.
Thanks!

Have you visited a dermatologist? It sounds like psoriosis. Are the flakes big? Have you already tried dandruff shampoo with no results? You might need to make an appointment with you Dermatologist. It could be Psoriosis or something as simple as needing a sulfate free shampoo.
Do you do any chemical treatments on your hair (relaxers, perms, color etc) This products can cause flaking if applied to the scalp.
Anyway, I would probably try some Amla oil, as it is healing to the scalp as well as to the hair. Nutrogena T-gel is also very good, and I believe T-sal is stronger. I once had a problem with flaking and the T-gel worked great.
Hi, so you do use hair color. Do you do it yourself or have done at the salon? If you do it yourself, make sure you are not getting it on your scalp. You can get the Amla oil on e-bay, if you want to try it. I've been using it and I have to say, my hair is looking really good, and my scalp has never felt better. It used to get kind of dry and itchy, but not anymore. I can't stand the smell though (I swear it reminds me of cat piss LOL). But It goes away when I wash it out. I put it on at night and cover hair with a shower cap an wash it out in the morning. You are supposed to do it twice a week. Amla is the oil that women from India use to keep their hair beautiful and to prevent premature grays. And I have to say it must really work because they have beautiful hair.
You can also try organic jojoba oil. It works great too, and it is great for the skin as well.
I don't think psoriasis is necesarily all over. My ex used to have it just on his scalp and forehead. He used to get these huge flakes. That's why I thought of it. But try the T-gel and see how it goes. If that doesn't work, then you might have to consult a professional.
Have you been under alot of stress, or gone through any big changes lately? Because that can also cause hormonal imbalances and can cause the flakines.
Anyway goo luck and great hair!

I agree with Sharyq11. My husband gets this (psoriosis). He will literally pick chunks of skin off of his scalp. Happens worse in winter when his scalp is even more dry. Try not to use very hot water on it which seems to make his worse. The T-gel should help some.Or you could try something that contains Salicylic Acid, which helps exfoliate the dead skin off the scalp.
There is another thread somewhere on the forum just about psoriosis, maybe under skin care? Where someone says it is caused by bacteria that live in the intestines. If it continues,a dermatologist should be able to help you get it under control.
