i use Clairol Natural Instincts semi-permanent color on my hair about every 2 months. I put it on the roots and then the last 5 minutes i comb it thru the rest. My problem is after about a week or so the gray is coming back and then rest of it is brassy looking...i have dark brown hair. How often is it safe to color my hair?

because it is semi I always put it all over my hair since it is only left in for 10 minutes anyways.
Maybe that is the problem. It is not like permanent where you only are supposed to do the roots.Semi's wash out,and rather quickly in my opinion as well.
YOu may think about trying a color deposting shampoo. They help ALOT when dealing with fading. A good one to buy online is called ARTec browns.

I have found that my hair only grows during 2 weeks out of the month, the week before my period, and the week during it (sorry if that's TMI, but I have a point).  Therefore, I do my roots at the end of the last week it will grow, that way it looks absolutely rootless for the next 2 weeks.

hmmmm  well i hada a hysterectomy 4 years ago so i don't know if that makes a difference or not with mine. I don't do mine all over because i leave it on for 20 minutes like it says to for resistant gray...i still notice the ends of the top getting a bit darker than the roots...it sucks to ge old  lol

Maybe you might want to consider using permanent then. It doesnt wash out as much as semi's do.Then you will only have to color the roots. I take it you want to stay close to your natural color right?
Because I have heard blonde covers grey easier and the roots are less noticable.

Usually darker Perm. colors arent as harsh as lighter ones (In MY opinion because they have less peroxide). If you just stick to the roots you should be ok.
Have you tried getting a color depositing shampoo yet? It may make a difference.
If you cant order online try John Frida Color Glaze (basically the same thing)
