I would like to add highlights to my hair but the problem is that about 7 or 8 months ago I colored my hair a dark auburn and now my natural hair color grew in which is dark brown so I have half and half how can I add highlights.

I bought a hair color medium brown to color my hair and did a strand test it came out almost black. why is this?  It is from Clairol Nice and Easy
