Hey everyone!
I was just looking for a little advice with "starting over"
Currently my hair is sitting on my shoulders, with some grown out layers (my last salon visit was in January), and some highlights which are growing out. Due to my current financial situation (college kids are pretty poor!), I really don't have the money to keep the highlights up. I was thinking that I could possibly do an all over color, close to what my hair is naturally (a medium brown). Would this be a good option for "starting over"?
I really can't play around with the cut too much because of the fact that I'm a volunteer firefighter (with a heavy call volume) so I need to be ready at the drop of a hat to throw my hair in a pony tail and run, without fear of helmet hair - so I've pretty much given up on trying to be trendy and elaborate. I've even stopped blow drying because of this - I truly have no style lol.
Any input would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to get this underway within the next week or so?

Hi! Sorry about your frustration. Layers do tend to start blending the longer they go without being trimmed, but as a rule, I don't think layers do favors for straight hair. There ARE exceptions, but not many. The main thing is to be patient. Heck, you've already gone 4 months!
I think that if you occasionally trim *1/2"* or so ONLY from the bottom (maybe having a VERY trusted friend do it), I think you'll be pleased before you know it. And to me, some variation in color, e.g. your highlights, only make long hair more eye-catching and appealing. Sounds like you want long hair back, so there is no reason not to enjoy the ride. Yeah, I could definitely go for having my long hair back. I went on one of those emotional whirlwinds where I'd grow it out - then cut it off - grow it out - cut it off for about 2 years... so right now I think i'm back on a *grow it out* swing... it just makes things easier with the fire helmet.

No more "helmet head" with long hair! Good luck re-growing. And always tuck you hair inside your suit. One woman firefighter on another site had her long braid singed years ago. It had to be cut short, much to her sorrow. Bob

I love how the main point of this thread was to answer the question about the hair color and not the cut, and yet the replies deal only with the cut situation... which isn't much of a situation at all.

It depends how light your highlights are.If they are very bleached white,they will be harder to get to hold color.
If they are just a lighter blondish color (but not white) it shouldnt be too hard. Start by buying a red colored hair dye. Nothing too bright,something natural looking like a blondish red or light auburn. Dont use the color activator,just the color and apply to the highlights. Leave on for 10-20 minutes Dont wash out. Then color with a brown of your choice over top.This time using the color activator. Leave on another 20 minutes,and rinse.
This advice was given to me by Clairol at www.clairol.com. I contacted them when I was going from blonde to brown.
