To practice doin your back act like you're edging it but have the clippers turned off. This will help you keep a steady hand and show you how it'll be. Eventually you'll get it and master it like me :-D

I stopped tryin to line myself up, because the first time i tried to, i messed up a lil on my left side and tried to even it up by cut a lil off my right side and i ended up cutting 1/4 of my right side completely off. Dang, that was an embarrasing 2 weeks

My recommendation for all newbies and neophyte wavers: Go to the barbershop and get a professional haircut. If you can afford a professional haircut, get one. It will help you maintain and develop your wave pattern better than cutting your own hair.
