1.Must have a clear idea of what the haircut is about, during consultation.
2.Must have an idea of what type of hair you have.
3.Must educate you of do`s and dont`s on your specific type of hair.
4.Must know thelatest trends on hair.
5.Must never agree to the impossible.

6. Stylist should always consider what the client wants are and nevermind what the stylist would like the client to look like so we the clients don`t walk out with six inches less when we only asked for 1/2 inch......

Hi Krissty,

Glad you enjoyed it. This article will also appear in a national hair magazine in either February or March. :-)

Best wishes,

Yes Damon proper consultation. But in that case I am mentioning what more like putting the stylist opinion`s aside and developing good listening skills and doing what they are paid to do.

I also enjoy reading Karen`s article and had to really laugh at no 8 about stylist being a therapist.
Too often I was the one listening to the stylist problems. I wish the stylist would leave their problems at home at times.

Proper consultation is proper consultation.
Proper consultation is also about an agreement on what is about to take place.
The job of a stylist is to listen, understand, and to be professional.
If a client is overly process and wants highlights and a perm at the same day.
That is impossible without frying your hair out,so a professional will
definitely refuse to do the service or give her other options.
Again this is only a fracture of what a proper consultation is.

I totally agree with you about proper consultation. Everytime I`ve gotten great service it`s been after the hairdresser really listened to what I wanted. The time before the service is when the hairdresser should let you know if what you want won`t work and why. This way there are no surprises.

Damon most of my stylist have been great. I have a high respect for most of them.
I am going to tell you what happen to me once.
One day out of the blue decided to try out this new styling place that was in my neigborhood. I walked in and said exactly what I wanted. I was introduced to this young stylist which I didn`t know at the time that she was just training. I sat down and showed her exactly what I wanted. At the time my hair wasn`t cut straight across it went in a curve at the back. I wanted to keep that curve look and only wanted about 1/2 to 1 inch off. We talked about it and she seem to totally understand what I wanted. What I should have done was walked out because firstly she didn`t understand how to brush out long hair. She started at the top and I had to repeat five times and show her that we brush at the bottom going up. ( Poor torture).
Another stylist steped in and agreed that what I was explaining to her was correct. ( I thought it was strange that she didn`t know how to brush out my hair)
Then I said " do you understand what I am asking?"
She said yes that I only want 1/2 to 1 inch off.
At that point I totally trust her and was involved in the stylists conversation about cooking etc. Not paying attention to what she was doing and realize that it seem to take more time for this 1/2 to 1 inch cutting and hair was hitting the floor.
Then she said she was finished. I looked and found my hair straight cut and six inches off. Paid for the service without saying one thing and walked out. Five seconds later walked right back in and demanded to talk to the manager. His attitude was that I still have long hair and she was new. He didn`t see why I was peaved about the lost of hair. He threw in that she was new and I threw in that how new does a stylist have to be not be able to trim 1/2 to 1 inch when that is mostly what they do in school! Then he asked why the heck I choose to come to their salon ( stupid question) and I said" Why you don`t want to be in business and make money?" I got my money back and warned every female that I knew that had hair. I felt valided, betrayed, butchered etc.
I had good stylist in the past but one became a drunk, one is divorce wanted to die, the other moved away etc.
One I really like but she is 3 hours away and I am facing of trying to find someone else.
How hard is it to just trim long hair? I would think that long hair is much easier to handle than layer or short hair.
So yes there was good consultation and demonstrations of what I wanted. She on the other hand decided to do what she wanted.

The cut itself was perfect. If it could be perfect at six inches off I am sure she could have cut it perfectly at 1 inche off. My family and friends giggled and said it was cute. But that wasn`t the point was it.

Hey Diane, sorry to hear about what happened to you. I had the same thing happen to me once..I guess the sytlist was a MULLET HATER :) She was more worried about getting out of work on time and was b*tching all the way while cutting my hair. Needless to say I ened up with something I totaly didnt want, and the worst part is, she knew it. The only tip I gave her was to think of a good story to tell her boss because I was going to complain. I didnt have to pay for the haircut and apparently this sytlist had done this to other people as well because I never saw her there again but when my ex-gf went to bo-rics for a haircut and I went with her, there was our lovely butcher stylist.....

Really sorry that had to happen to you.
There will always people like that no matter what profession it is.
When they break the agreement that`s is not right wether it comes out good or bad.It is not what you ask for.Whatever actions you decide it`s upto you,and you don`t have to feel sorry for anything because you have just been violated.
Proper consultation is also a way of protecting you from hairstlyst, who decides to disregard your rights.
When talking to a stylist try and make sure they repeat what you just ask for. This way you get double the protection.
Proper consultation is better than just not knowing anything that will take or suppose to take place.

I`ve been very lucky. I`ve always had a good cut/trim everytime I have gone in. Maybe it`s because I live in a small town and so they take extra care to listen because the population is so small and not that many customers. One angry customer could really hurt business.

I know that most hairstylists mean well and try to do a great job but there is always one here or there that is not as good as the next one and so it is important to do that consultation. I agree.
that is a hair DON'T

Doesn`t hurt if you have a picture,of what you want.
But make sure your stylist is seeing the samething your seeing on the picture.
Talk about the LENGHT,make them show you what an inch is.
Talk about the LAYERS if you want any.
Talk about TEXTURE,choppy,chunky,soft,clean,thick
Talk about the BANGS,if you have any.
