Hi Nicole,
I`m really sorry about the person who cut off a lot more than you requested. She simply wasn`t very professional, in my opinion. I think it would have been fine for her to tell you that in her opinion she would suggest more of a trim to make sure the ends were free of split ends. But ultimately, you are the customer and she should do what you say, even if she diagrees.
The problem is that those kind of stylists speak ill for their professions. There ARE some wonderful stylists who would never dream of going against a client`s wishes!

There are several reasons I refuse to go to a salon to get my hair trimmed, the least of which being I don`t trust anyone with scissors around my tailbone length hair. When I decided that I was going to grow my hair to my waist when I was young, I went to the salon where my mother and sister went to get my hair trimmed. They told me that the lady who was doing my hair was a specialist in kids` hair. I asked for 1 1/2" trim, and the lady cut close to 4 inches off. I asked the hairdresser why she cut so much off, and she told me it was all damaged. Even though I was a competitive swimmer and knew my hair was damaged from it, I had a hard time believing that it was necessisary to cut that much off. I was so mad that I refused to go back to the hair dresser for almost a year. My mother finally got so frustrated with me that she took me to a different salon, and there they listened to me. About a year later, I went back to the same salon where the 4" hackjob took place, and had a different lady trim my hair, and she listened to me and did a decent job. Then, I decided to grow my bangs out and didn`t get a haircut for 9 months. I knew that my mother was giving me that "we need to get you to the salon" look, but I beat her to the punch and trimmed my own hair. I actually did a decent job of it, too. From there on for the next year or so, I did it myself, and although my mother and sister got frustrated with my hair trimmings all over the bathroom, they put up with it because I was actually taking care of my hair for once. They kept asking me why I was doing it myself, and when I told them I didn`t trust hairdressers, they finally started listening to me. I kept telling them that if they had Trina (the lady who`d been doing my sister and mother`s hair for years) trim my hair, I might go to the salon to get it trimmed professionally. Finally, they took me to Trina, and I got my hair trimmed by her for the next year. By March of my freshman year in high school, I had picked up enough tricks from Trina that I decided I could do it myself, and I haven`t had a professional cut since then, almost 11 years ago.
1"/37"/42"+ to see how long it will grow.
My hair is almost to my knees (~50") and continues to grow longer. Rather slowly these days, but that's ok - it's still *growing*.
As a stylist,I would like to hear, and learn more about peoples concern about their hair. I know there are other things that are more important than hair, but gosh darn it. Let's have a little fun... So loosen up and just let it all out... WHAT WAS YOUR WORST EXPERIENCE? I'll start! I bought a frosting kit from a drugstore, but my hair was way too short,to do that.So my hair was all patches of chicken yellow color cause my hair was also black. And black is very hard to turned into blode. So the next day,I went to school and everyone was throwing gummy bears on the back of my head They said,it will give my hair some bounce...
I have several.....
One was when my hairdresser cousin talked me into trying a new temporary hair dye and dyed my hair burgundy....and it wouldn`t wash out! I was mortified!
The latest was when I got talked into getting one of those "Rachel-on-friends" do`s last march and cut my mid-back length hair up just past my shoulders in back and so short on the sides that I couldn`t put my hair up. Baaaaad move, since my hair is naturally wavy and I had just moved to Florida and couldn`t put my hair up. Arrrrrrgh!

When I was about 10, and our regular stylist was on holiday my Dad decided to take me for a trim at a new "modern" men`s salon that had opened on the main street into town.
As my hair was really fine, I was allowed to keep it long in a pageboy/bowlcut style, just above the collar, with level line at the earlobes. Otherwise it would look like I was thinning out on top.
Dad told the guy cutting my hair just to give me a trim. The guy asked if it were OK if he "reshaped my head". I tried calling out, but Dad didn`t hear me and I came out with something that only had 1 inch on top, 1/2 inch at the sides.
Mom was furious. I didn`t speak to anyone at school for a week and refused to go near anywhere with smoked windows or mirrors and chairs. ------
Second worst experience is getting a haircut before an interview, and telling the stylist I want my hair "graduated from three inches on top to one inch at at the collar". "No", she says "you mean tapered" and uses the clippers.
Fearing I`d get a Forest Gump cut, I refused to have the top/sides cut, and ended up with a bowlcut....

Thanks for the advice! I only wish I WERE less vain and actually felt comfortable enough to let my grey hairs show. I do have a very good friend with dark brown hair with LOTS of grey, and she doesn`t color her hair. I truly envy her, that she is comfortable enough in herself that she doesn`t feel the need to "give in" to society`s expectations to hide those signs of aging. And the grey does look good on her.
I sincerely hope that one day I, too, will reach the point where I can feel okay with it. But unfortunately, at least for now (at the ripe old age of 39) I still find myself buying into the concept of fighting signs of my advancing age.
hairstyling is a profession, just like any profession you will encounter the ones that are bad and you encounter a good one. You can go to four different doctors for the same problem and you can get the same diagnosis with four different treatments.
Anyway, another bad haircut I gave when i was just starting out.I cut my mothers hair to a pixie. The problem is she has very thick straight hair. And I really did not know back then that ,it just doesn`t work for her hair type. She wore it proudly anyway, even though she looked like she stuck her finger in an electrical outlet.THANKS MOM
OK ~ I paid for this one too! I got my hair cut pixie short and my stylist suggested that instead of the all over color, we should go with a bleach and tone . So, being the ignorant one that I was, I decided to do it. The whole process was awfull!! Not only did I have to sit in the chair for 2 and 1/2 hours, I had blisters on my scalp for weeks afterwards. Thats not the worst part....the color turned out green. We had to wait a couple of weeks to correct it because my scalp was so damaged. I was so embarassed I had called in sick to work until we were able to fix it. (just a little vain) It was a horrific experience and I will never have a bleach and tone done ever again!

YIKES!!! That certainly sounds like an awful experience. Why not let your natural hair color grow out? I personally think gray hair is not such a bad thing. Many women probably feel pressure from their friends to color their hair and cover their gray but it can look sophisticated and in most cases give nice contrast to someones hair.

I usually get all over semi-permanent haircolors but one day my stylist suggested that because I have more gray hairs coming in on top, but not a lot on the sides or back, we could go with a permanent hair color just on top for better coverage. She swore she would match it to the semi-permanent color and I believed her. WRONG! I would up looking like a Duracel Coppertop Battery, I had brassy reddish hair on top and dark brown hair on sides and back. I was so upset, I wound up going back to her and she toned the top down some with a semi-permanent, which was somewhat better but still not what I wanted. I wound up letting the top grow back in.
I am again thinking about attempting permanent color - but this time ALL OVER. No wonder I am so chicken, though, after this experience.

Heh call it fear...I dunno. I guess the thought of a guy doing hair at a salon or something I`m afraid of what some friends would think. I`m currently in pursuit of another dream. I do ok with the friends and my wife`s hair. Maybe someday who knows? For now I know enough on how to cut any hairstyle with the books and information i`ve acquired over the years. If I did goto school I`d probably look at opening a day spa or something. I like seeing people feel good about themselves. Never worked on afro hair though but I know if I went to beauty school I would learn.
Heh well I`ve always worn my hair a bit longer than most men but I have big ears so I kinda use my hair to cover them up. I went to where I normally got my haircut it was a unisex salon and the stylist was just about to put the finishing touches on my haircut when she grabbed her trimmers to clean up the sides and back. She asked "sideburns or no sideburns" I said "Please save the sideburns" she must have heard "Shave the sideburns" and shave she did as she put the clippers at the top of my ear and pulled them down. I saw my sideburns fall off and my ear was fully exposed, plus the haircut looked like a mullett. I absolutely hated it...yes they grew back quickly but boy did I feel like a redneck walking out of that salon and thru the mall to my car. It`s been a good ten years but that is the reason I cut my own hair now...no worries of having to go thru the haircut horrors. Not to mention I`m pretty good at cutting hair since I`ve been doing it for over 10 years. I cut my wifes and my friends hair...they say i should goto school because I`m so good at doing haircuts but I make too much money at my current job...Lol
When I was starting out as a hairstylist I was so ****y like I knew everything. We`re talking about 7yrs ago,I believed that I could anything. I went to an interview for a job, told the owner ,I was the best yada,yada,yada... He ask me to cut a client and blowdry the hair. IT TOOK ME FOREVER,AND WHEN I MEAN FOREVER ,WE`RE TALKING 3 - 4 HRS. I did not get the job,but I learned not to talk too much unless,I know I can do the job. She actually looked better before,Ha,ha,ha!

My worst experience was when my mom and Aunt Margie decided they could save money if my Aunt gave me (7 at the time) a Toni perm at home. It turned out so horrible that I looked like Shirley Temple for months afterwards and was plumb miserable. All because Toni was one of the advertisers for the Miss America Pagent and my mom happened to see the TV show with that ad. I really hated looked so much like a giant curl head.
When I was in Jr High spiral perms were in and i wanted one sssssooooo bad.
we were poor farm kids and used cheap shampoo -- with hard mineral water (Smelled like rotten eggs) -- so forget actually going to a salon...
Momma came home with a oglvie perm and decided to perm my mid back length, board straight hair...
1. perm rods were too small 2. perms and severe mineral build up on hair don`t mix 3. my stepdad insisted that I was not going out of the house with a wet head. (I was looking forward to mousse for that defined curl look of the 80s.) We didn`t have a blowdryer so I had to set my hair on brush rollers every night.
omg....the end result was orange, burnt hair that was a fluffy cotton ball mess...

Dude, give it time! You posted four messages in less then twenty four hours. Some messages last weeks before they are answered. Just take a chill pill & relax. Not everyone spends every waking minute on the internet. People need time to see it. I can`t but agree that you must be really desperate. I suggest just sitting back & waiting a few days. I`m sure someone will reply eventually.
AHH!PHOOEY! I`m not going anywhere, until I get a story. Look alive people, look alive.... What we have here is,a problem to communicate.. Is Red Lobster having that shrimp special again? K-mart with the blue light? Wendy`s Big meal deal? What is it people? Richard Simmons is in town or something?
