    Posted: June 22 2007 at 10:12pm
hi everyone. I have been coloring my hair to cover grays (15-20%) for a few years now.  I recolor it every 4-5 weeks time. My hair feels dry and some sort of breakage seems to be happening. I would like to either do a hot oil or deep conditioning treatment for my hair to protect from damage. What should I do?  I wanted something that would not make my color hair fade fast especially the colored gray areas. I really need some help. Can someone help me find a solution?

Hope my fellow members can assist me on this.

When you color do you do the entire head or just the roots?

I use Tresemme leave in conditioning spray, which I find fab. This wont fade colour and no need to rinse off hair, apply to towel dried hair.

hi msgracie,
listen, i was in your boat too...you are not that gray..a demi-permenant color (personally i LOVE Redken Shades EQ), you can find that on the internet if need be....there is this stuff made by redken that they call shots....i put one on for strength when my hair was breaking off and falling out from so much expermentation...it worked great also they have shots for color seal retention, you put it on, leave it for 5 min then spray the ph phix and rinse and then condition...i have heard k-pac is fantasitc.  i hope you get your hair fixed...it is a bad feeling when things like that are going on....usually, if using permenant hair color they recommed just doing your roots and if your hair needs it to refresh up the rest of your hair you can put the rest on your hair and let it be for 5 minutes or so...it is becoming too porous and you can also go the sally's and get a neutral filler, use it as a conditioner and then put on a very moisturizing conditioner and let it sit for however long you want....it will get better but i would suggest demi-perm....let me know how things go.

I color from the roots extending it to the ends. I'm currently using loreal castings which has no ammonia and less damage I presume. Is this semi or demi-permanent color? Another problem I have is some grays won't take the color. Generally, do I apply color to damp or dry hair? Is there anything I did wrong? I would really like to stick with a demi-permanent. Any suggestions?
Btw, what is a neutral filler? What is its use?

neutral filler- a colorless( i have seen it in clear and a muddy looking color) protein that your hair take the color evenly by filling in the weak spots with  also helps make the hair a bit stronger. they have colored ones to you can pick them all up at sally's. just add it to the hair dye or the bottle will tell you how to mix to put directly on your hair(my bottle does)
i used a golden brown  filler when i went from blonde to a caramel color. really helped my damaged hair take the color in better

ms gracie,
suicides eve is correct in how to use the protein filler...sorry i didn't go in to detail....i am going to look up loreal castings and find out what it is...i will finish this post in a sec..ok, castings is semi perm....you need to move up to demi to color the stubborn grays....but the same w/demi....when you touch up your roots, just add some shampoo to the left over dye and put it on your hair and let it sit for 5 min and then rinse....good thing you were using semi!!!!  smart girl.....and seriously, the neurtal protein filler is really great....go to sallys.  let me know what you decide to go with.

I just check out loreal site. It says Loreal Castings will last up to 28 shampoos. Doesn't that make it a demi color. I'm confused and correct me if I'm wrong. Any demi permanent products that is highly recommended to cover stubborn greys.

I will try the neutral filler. Can this be used on gray hair?

yes, the filler can be used on gray hair....28 shampoos is semi....semi can mean anywhere from 6-30 shampoos....demi's last up to 2 months...i use demi, shades eq and it is great...i had torn my hair up with too much permenant...go to sally's and they can tell you the brands that are great at covering up gray....too many of my friends use only demi and now i am to and the condition of my hair is so much improved.  you'll do great.

unfortunately, can't find any Sally's store around. Can you recommend any demi color products  that I can find under loreal, clairol, wella, revlon and etc. Also, Loreal Excellence has this pre-color protective treatment applied to hair first then the dye. Is this the same as neutral filler.

hey!  what is your color?  you can get a filler (just go with me here) that will help cover resistant grays.....then use the demi conditioning gloss....ok, let me see.....need to look back at what brands you wanted to know about....have you ever thought about ordering online???  i could tell ya what to get....i just used the most amazing shampoo....it is by schwarzkoph....i'll to into that later...except to say that one shampoo made a huge difference in my hair...get back to me and let's see what we can do...mean while i will look at the brands you have at your disposal.

you know, loreal is good....they do have a good product.  i would use whatever the box required you to do....a tip, you need a clairifying shampoo and a good protein conditioner 2 days before you do what you are gonna do,  it will help everything go better.
